Trying out the distributor that Deep sold to me. I can't start the car now. Installing the distributor supposed to be straight foward just plug it in and wrench it down right? Am I supposed to check for anything? Like set the #1 cyclinder in a certain position? Is there some sorta secret voodoo dance I supposed to do so this car starts? I made sure all wiring was plugged in right. Just wondering if someone can shine some light on this. Thanks.
p.s My old distrubtor didn't have any heat shield! Could that be why my car would be stalling when the car is warmed up?

Did you plug the wires correctly? is this just a cap or the whole dizzy? if its the whole dizzy then its not just a plug it in job. cause you might get your timing WAY off... and it wont start naturally.
First you gotta set the number one cylinder at top dead center. You can do this by taking out the spark plug out of cylinder one, and putting something long down the hole so it touches the piston. And as another check, you can remove the oil cap, and when the number 1 piston is at tdc, you will see a notch on the actual cam shaft when you look down through where you took the oil cap off.
Then align the dizzy shaft so that the notch on it is facing up and at the number one mark on the dizzy cap. Slide the shaft into the head, but try to do it as smooth as you can, as it will ensure that it went in the right way. Tighten the bolts, but not tight, just firmly.
If you haven't done so yet, mark the notch (using a white marker or white out) on the crank pulley, and mark the numbers on the crank case. If i remember right, you want 10degrees BTDC? IT should say on the bottom of your hood.
Get your timing light out, start up the engine, and check your timing. IF it needs minor adjustments just loosen the bolts on the dizzy and rotate if necessary...
It's a very tedious procedure... And i just did this from memory.. hope it helps, if not give me an email.

How would I crank the engine by hand so I can set the #1 piston TDC?
Pull the plugs and put a socket and ratchet on the crank pulley (the big one with the fan attached) and turn it until the number 1 piston is at top dead center. You'll know when by sticking your finger in where the plug is supposed to be.
The crank pulley is a 17mm hex. Just use a long handle socket and make sure you're turning the motor the right way. Another way to check if your motor is TDC is to remove the cam gear cover and match up the marks on gears with the backing plate. Check out the attacked photo. Just line the green circles with the orange ones.
is that ur motor u took a pic of, shane?'
ur cam gears are diff from mine!!!! mien are like 5 star!!

I have been told that it is a good idea that when rotating the engine by hand to to always turn it in its natural direction. Even if it means going an extra 360 degrees.
This could be advice that is full of shit but I trust that person so I do it anyway.

ya but i dont see the difference if u turn it the other way...
there's a problem with it? can someone explain why....
because all the valves are opening and closing when they should, and pistons are still going up and down....just.....crank is going the other way. if it can go one direction, what's to say that it will hurt itself going the other direction

i dunno why either, but it says so in the manual. maybe since a lot of the pumps are hooked up and you really don't want pumps flowing backwards. maybe especially pumps with filters :P
