Question Need Inside Left front door panel: 1989 Corolla SR5

Hi,

We really need a Left Driver inside door panel for a 1989 Toyota Corlla SR5 -2DR/FWD. this type of door panel has the armrest molded into the panel.

I have been unable to find one. last year on eBay some arse-hole was going nuts outbididng me for one. I thought i could get a car upholstery shop to repair ours or make a new one. No-way, I went there and they guy said no.

I have sent an email to some auto-wreckers... not one answer yet.

anyone have an idea where we can get one or get this one repaired ?

thanx..

mine is not the GTS

its a 1989 Toyota Corolla SR5. 2dr/FWD Carb 1.6
need inside drivers side door panel. This door panel has the arm rest that is molded into the panel, it is not the bolt on type arm rest panel.

the color happens to be grey. But I can live witht he wrong color as any panel is better than the one in ther enow. Our dog put's it's paws on it to many times and collapsed ours..

I am already getting quotes form an online pay service for searching wrecking yards.
so I am ready if I find one.

thank you,

you can also email me:

retiredat44(at)hotmail.com

please put Corolla Door Panal int e subject and body so it does not go the trash bin.

I am in California

note: I a getting very close to getting one, if someone offers me one first that works.. so please,,, let me know asap..

Cool

Our dog is mostly responsible for runing the panel, he used to / or still does go crazy when he saw another dog and would jump on the door with his front paws..

New Door Panel (from wrecking yard) was real nice condition except the vinyl had lifted up from the corner in the lower left side, from the molded particle board and along the armrest inside. it looked impossible for me to fix. i took it to an upholstery shop. The guy wanted $275, to put some new materail over the old panel. He wanted to put the new materal over the who door panel! $275.00 !! I politley said, see you later.

I will look for a before the fix, picture.

I attached the after the after fix pictures.

What I did to fix it.

The whole corner area where the vinal completely separated and lisfted from the partical board molding. I filled that in with 'Wood Putty'. Let it dry int he sun half the day. Theyn back into the grage to work on it and let it dry. I applied the all pupose E6000 Glue. We have some, because my wife woks in a crafts store. I also look up upholstery work using Google. Upholstery shops use that type of glue too. So I used that to put the lifted Vinyl down back along the arm rest area, where your arm would lay. This is where the bloth meets the vinyl. I used Duct Tape to hold it firmly in place overnight. (I forgot to say, in the areas worked I place a mask of masking tape to protect the areas surrounding the work areas).

I also put masking tape between the cloth and the wood putty so it would not soak into the cloth. I added a strip of some leather material I cut from a piece I alreay had from an upholdertery store. I added that very small long narrow pice as a layer filler to extend the vinyl that had seperated. That piece, I glued down to the area of the wood putty that dried, and along the vinyl when the arm rest meets the cloth.

I also kept seein gthese commericals and adds for the liquid vinyl, so I sent for some of that. I applied that stuff to the area over the woody putty and vinyl. It sorta works, but I am very clumsy with shaky hands, so I got mixed results.

The last part, is still unfinished. I could have left this last part alone, but elected to take a piece of wood and place it over the vihyl where it meets the cloth,. This is the arm rest part where it meets the cloth ont he inside. arm rest area, wher eyou lay your arm. The vinyl there was glued back down, and a new strip of leather layed under that and glued. But, I was very woored that the hot summer will melt the glue and it will be curling up int he hot weather. I took a wood stick, which is actually a paint stirring stick. I cut it to length. I painted it grey. I drilled holes in it. I ran some some screws through it down into the arm rest, along the inside where the vinyl meets the cloth. This will hold that vinyl down good. And, if your dog lays it's paws and claws down on it, it will have more protection too. I tried to apply the liquid vinyl down over the screws, but the first attempt did not look good. So I cleaned that off. I am stil debating on weather to try that again, The screws don't look good, but it's ain't real bad either.

In any case, it's an old car, and the door panel came out decent.

IMHO

Cool

note the lower inside left, where it is curved it is completely hollow there, where the vinyl lifted off the molded press board, and has a cavant cave there that it at least 1 inch of air...
that is the area I filled with wood putty, or wood dough...

the form is natural and the curve looks completey smooth and natural and there is no open cave there any longer with the filling.

The wood putty dries soft, for shaping, sanding etc.. so you can work on it after it dries..
And, you can glue fabric to it..

See the door panel on the car viewed as a whole piece:

well i must say it looks a helluvah lot better then your old one lol ! i had no idea how to fix the problem, i was thinkin if i knew of a way to get it to stretch back to the point where it will lay flat against the board, then you could probly glue it back in place with the stuff you mentioned..

Well, if you happen to be in Northern California, I have always manage to find Corolla SR5s at Pick N Pull. Last time, I needed a rear taillight for my SR5 and I was able to find it there. I'm not sure if theres a junkyard in your area... but they should be anywhere, just look it up on Yahoo Yellowpages. It will save you on shipping and handling.
