My friend has an '00 corolla and he's having a problem with it. Here's what he described:
"So in november, my engine died and i replaced it with a used engine (one that had under 55,000 miles). Everything's been fine with it until tonight. Now the engine is running extremely hard: when its idling (at stoplights and whatnot), the car shakes violently, while i'm driving it can be very jerky (drives fine for a bit, feels like the engine drops out, then picks itself back up again). This is pretty vague, but if anyone has any ideas as to what it could be, please let me know."
I told him it could be a number of things, but that it's probably either a fuel or air delivery problem. Also told him to to have the car scanned at autozone, and to check his MAF sensor. But I'm not familiar with corollas so I don't know if it even has an MAF sensor. Can someone give me a better reply? Thanks.

I recently had very similar symptoms in a '90 corolla, and it needed a tune up (spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor, pcv valve, fuel filter all replaced) and also one of the fuel injectors was shot and needed to be replaced. So it couldn't hurt to check all of those things.

Size is very deceiving...don't let her fool you. Her name is well-earned.
those vaccum leaks can cause crazy idling issues. Spray some soapy water on the vaccum lines, if you see some bubbles, then you got some leaks . TPS (like aaron said) could be causing the dropping out while driving and then picking back up symptom, can pick a used one up at the junk yard for a little cash.
