USA Fuel filter

Just changed mine on 93 Corolla. Very difficult to get at. Two questions: What is the easy way to do this correctly and I don't remember ever changing it and with 143,000 miles was still running fine. Is this a part that you need to change? Thanks!

it is a part you need to change, they were designed for use in the leaded fuel days, now that we have moved on from them, we use them to filter small crap(mainly rust from our gas tank now a days ) that might have gotten up in the fuel line. for the most part most companies have gone to non-servicable fuel filter in the new cars 2000+ (not required to change the life of the vehicle)

actually ... none of the post 90's cars have been designed for leaded gasoline as it was being phased out as the end of 80's.
The reason why theres a fuel filter is because theres always possibilities of dirt and other junk in tank or just something with the gas that can clog the injectors which have a very fine mesh screen in them.

USA Owners manual

The owners manual maintenance schedule does not show fuel filter replacement?

i changed mine, was a real pain to do, didnt seem to make any difference. i cut the old one open and there was this nasty nasty dark sludgy stuff covering the filter. judging from the size of the filter its probably good for more than 100K miles, but if you wait a long time between changes the lines will seize up and you'll have to do it the hard way (which actually makes it easier later on)
