4afe to 7afe

i have a 92 corolla sedan , all stock @ 115,000 miles..

i've only had it for a little less than 1/2 a year and i've put on about 3000 miles, i dont know how well maintaind it was before i got it but it still runs pretty well, the only issue i have with it is the starter , which can easily be replaced and the fact that it kinda sticks in reverse sometimes , it will come out but i have to really push it out..

anyway, was going to give it a good tune up , change all belts, water pump , wires , air filter, fuel filter etc, etc.. but , in the past 3000 miles i've realized that the 4afe is eating too much oil ,so i've put the tune up on hold till i find out whats going on, i havent found any major oil leaks , so i'm going to give it a compression test , i've been told the oil loss could be due to bad piston rings , which would be bad news, best case scenario its just hte vss.. or some leak i havent spotted yet.

This is a daily driver , not a project car so worst case i'm going to get the 4afe rebuilt..
but then , i started wondering about the 7afe, figured since i'm going to spend , i should maybe try and get something better in htere, that doesnt require any major wiring or custom work of any kind...

so , i was wondering if anyone knew if the 7afe was an easy replacement ?

by easy replacement i mean , will all my accessories still line up? all sensors , plugs, wiring etc still be usable

i've read that the 7afe and 4afe heads are very similar

any help would be appreciated!!

My dad attempted this and gave up. He had a '94 with a blown 4afe and was going to swap in a 7afe he bought. Unfortunately the wiring didn't match up, and he didn't want to re-wire everything. He ended up putting in another 4afe and got it running again. Here's the story:

You're not missing out on much performance from the 7A-FE, believe me.

If you want something noticeably faster, get a 4AGE, otherwise you're just wasting time and money.

The 7a is not worth the trouble. You will need the ECU to run it, and with that comes new wiring. That and the 7A has a sensor that the 4A is missing and wont run without it.

There are some major issues when wiring. Just Rebuild if its your daily...

physically it'll fit, but when swapping an engine ALWAYS source the PCM, wiring harness and engine as ONE, all together, and preferably from the same car or atleast the same year and same emissions spec.

darkninja, your dads problem was he bought one thing here and one thing there and had fed spec mixed up with cali spec and obd1 mixed up with obd2.

i agree, theres not a huge difference in performance between the 2 engines. the peak numbers are close, but the difference is in where the power lies. the 7afe has most of its torque about 2000 rpm before the 4afe does.
