Excessive noise and vibration in cabin??? Please help

Hey all,

The car is a 1996 Toyota Corolla 5spd. No mods, bone stock.

The biggest problem I'm having is excessive vibration and noise in the cabin while both idling and driving. It seems particularly bad around 3,000 rpm.

I've only had the car looked at by one mechanic and so far they've said it's not the engine mounts or the harmonics/balance of the various shafts in the engine. They're telling me it's most likely something in the clutch assembly and/or related to the transaxle.

I refuse to pay $500 just for the labour to pull the tranny, and possibly to not even fix the problem.

So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem? Or if anyone has any suggestions of stuff to check.

Any and all feedback is highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Todd

I would consider adding dynamat extreme to the hood, firewall and drivers/passenger's door paneling to reduce engine noise

I have the 01 corolla 4 speen auto. Are you talking about the noise that the engine makes around 3,000 RPMS? some reviews claim that it is the VVT-i working. I have the same thing, but mine is not to bad.

My wind noise is killing me.

How did they determine it wasn't the motor mounts?

My 94 Corolla has a similar program. I am pretty sure it is one of the motor mounts that has gone bad...but not bad enough to shake the car horrendously like it usually does when the mounts go.

I put in new spark plugs/wires, ran seafoam through the engine and switched to mobil 1 synthetic and it has the vibration at a manageable level...it is usually only bad when the car is cold. For me it keeps my dad from having to replace one of the bottom motor mounts for the time being.

From what I understand, just visual inspection. I'm actually inclined to believe they didn't look hard enough.

I personally think it may be one of the rear motor/tranny mounts.

Is it common for the mounts on corollas to crack and only half work, per se?

And no I'm not talking about VVT-I or anything, I get the noise/vibration at a stop when idling, but it seems to continue and peak from 1krpm to 3krpm

Pull your car up against a curb, then with foot on brake and in gear, give it some gas. Watch the engine for excess movement. If it "rocks" like mine did, then you need new mounts.

Did the excessive noise and vibration exist when you first owned the vehicle, or has it recently become worse? Check all the normal possibilities first such as muffler system, engine mounts, tune-up parts (spark plugs, rotor, cap, wires), unbalanced tires, etc. Determine where the problems is coming from. There are many other owners and threads on this topic as these models have NVH problems. Typically it is a worn out engine, engine needs a tune-up, or EGR system malfunction.

generally if there's a problem with the "clutch assembly" making noise it's the t/o bearing.... which will change noise whether the clutch pedal is pushed in or not.....

motor mounts don't tend to show an ugly face while just cruising.... there's no load on the engine to move it in it's mounts unless you're on a really bumpy road..... they generally will make noise/vibration at idle. The front mount is most likely to go out. Check the passenger mount, there should be 2 rubber insulators (I remove all of mine as I don't care and the engine goes in easier) surrounding the mount... if they aren't there it can cause that mount to go bad and/or excessive vibration.

otherwise you could have too low of an idle and the engine just doesn't like it......
