On a 4AGE motor I would not run much more the 6-7psi of boost (if that). Stock they wouldnt be able to handle it. If I were you I would try to find a 4AGZE block and internals and go from there. The GZE motors were built to handle boost and are much more durable. It also depends on the compression of each cylinders and if they could handle it now. Then you have to think about supplying it with enough fuel, and the timing. I'm pretty sure the the stock ECU would throw error codes constantly under any boost. Theres a lot more to it then just slapping on a turbo.

in figuring out how much hp abuse your pistons can stand, boost is not your limiting factor, hp is , and for you clutch torque is your enemy

yea the 4AGE engines already have 160 Hp, mines a 4AFE, which is why is isnt particularly powerful. The compression ratio is currently 9.3:1

Engine1.6L four EFI DOHCHorsepower103 HP@6000RPMTorque102lb/ft@3200RPMBore 81mmStroke77mmCompression ratio9.3:1

I got told that i could safely run up to 8 psi from a small fast spooling turbo without changing any of my stock parts. I mean apart from modifying the ECU perhaps. What do you guys think?

HP is directly related to the amount of boost you're pushing, so boost is the limiting factor. As cylinder pressures go WAY up as boost increases.

your getting into alot of work if you decide to turbo an N/A car, if you have the time & money then go for it.. but if you dont know what your doing & dont have the cash for a reliable setup then your wasting your time... sounds like you really like the car as is, maby a cheap, easy way to go is to just rebuild the motor..

i would agree with this 2 years ago but i've seen a stock bigport on an AE86 owned by Paul Neetly of Neetronics boosting 14psi on stock internals. the biggest problem with others doing this is the set up is not tuned properly. with proper tuning (ie, dyno tuned not butt tuned) it is possible.

By the way the 4AGE 20v have 160 Hp not the 4AGE 16v. Go with a 20v setup, add an intake, exhaust, and maybe a 50 shot. But I wouldnt add boost on a stock 4AGE. It would prolly cost 1200-1500 bucks installed by a shop.

Stock internals on a 4AGE? Yea I guess it could be done. But how cool would you look pouring black smoke out of your exhaust under boost?

On paper yes.. in real life. no.

Intake, exhaust gives you maybe 5hp if you're lucky. 50shot is just as bland, you'll have to fill it up every once in a while, gets expensive and it does strain the engine aswell. ... As for the comment on turboing, thats just ignorant. You wont pour out black smoke on boost, unless you have alot of problems in your engine.

.....Black smoke is a function of fuel delivery, not engine internals.

Unless something explodes, in which case black smoke comes out EVERYWHERE.

Yea fill it up every ONCE and a while. Unless you are racing everyday then its a good investment.

You will have PLENTY of smoke if you put 14psi through a stock 4AGE.

Yes its from fuel delivery AND burning oil.

I have an AE92 with a ZE, and an AE92 with a GE.

Obviously Flashmn knows it all, so I will just keep my mouth shut now.

If you're burning oil to the point you're blowing out smoke, then you have something wrong, I'd look for the culprit in valve seals or piston rings. If its black because of fuel, then you're running pig rich, which isnt a good thing either.

And yes, I do happen to know alot about turbocharging as I've been doing it for a "while" now.
