2006 Corolla XRS engine squeal

I have a 2006 XRS with 5800 miles on it. I started hearing a screaching sound coming from the engine compartment in every gear between 5500 and 6500 RPM. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the entire transaxle assembly. As you can guess, that didn't solve the problem. Now they are telling me it is a harmonic vibration and they have had several other XRS with similar (what they call normal) noise and they can't fix it. The service manager told me this is one reason why they no longer use the engine. There is nothing normal about the noise and it didn't happen before. Got the district master tech coming out 4-2-07 to look at it.

Has anybody else had a similar problem or heard of it. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

You checked the tension on the serpent belt?
Looked at the pulleys?

I would also think it would be the tensioner. The 1zz is infamous for have this problem. The 2zz may have the same problem. It's worth a look at.

Believe it or not, prior to posting on here I did a search both here and on google for XRS engine problems and about the only thing I came up with that sounded similar was problems with the tension belt and pulley. I told the service manager twice to check it, however, he said they were convinced that wasn't the problem.

I am with you, and it makes perfect sense. This harmonic vibration is non sense. It is a squeal. I will push the issue with the master tech.

Thanks

If you are mechanically inclined you can probably check it yourself by simply taking the belt off.

I may end up doing that. I can't believe I have to solve their problems. The car only has 5800 miles on it, and they have had it for two weeks. Instead of taking the belt off themselves, they decide to replace the whole transaxle. Then they realized it is a problem with the engine. I don't know how they stay in business.
