I would not use a K & N filter in any vehicle at any time. In my opinion they are noisy and offer less filtration than is required to protect and engine.

I feel the same way, I put one on my car and found I lost some pep and gas millage, It might have just been my imagination but I just replaced it...It's only 6 months old and I have part of the recharging kit left plus the original box...$20+ shipping takes it!
Pic?

An air filters an air filter, it's just a matter of preference of how often you want to change them. Some people swear by K&N while others don't really like them.
Turns out the auto parts store I went to does not even list a K&N filter for a 1989 Toyota in their catalog. I think they start in about 1996? I think that is the oldest year in the K&N Air Filter book for Toyota.
i bought 1 about 8 months ago for $40 shipped for my 93 corolla and i noticed the increase in performance and gas milage, not but alot but noticable at least for me anyways

i have to disagree. there are so many types of air filter nowadays not all of them filter the same as others.

Gas mileage lost may be caused due to more air. Freer flowing from the filter, allows more in. Equals more fuel to compensate. Like ona colddd day how you run rich because of the air being denser.
