hey guys, im new to this forum, my 87 4runner just died, and i use it as a daily driver for my jeep project, so i am parting it out to buy an 89 corolla coupe. i have the car, the trouble is it idles real high. like 2300 rpms high. i cant figure out how to adjust it.
also, the kid i bought it of of stuck a trueno ram air hood, and front bumper on it for looks and put on some dumb 4" air ilter that isnt worthy of a power wheels. around 4500 rpm, if im pushing it, it can pop and sputter for a second. could this be a vaccuum issue with the silly filter, or maybe its getting too much air?
Check the air filter.
Adjust the idling with a screw driver on the throttle body.
the engine is carbureted, not tbi, where on the carb is the idle adjust screw. there are two screws with springs on the passenger side of the carb, i tried turning those a bit, but they didnt do anything, where else might i look for the adjuster? ill post up pics of it tomorrow.
saturday im trading the kid for the stock hood and bumper, and picking up the title. i plan on finding out if he has the stock air filter. ill also check the vaccuum lines. the car idles high even after i drive it home.
also, sometimes, the car will idle funny and rev a bit, going from about 2000 rpms to 2300, then drops to 2k and back to 2300 etc, any ideas? i think the hondas do that when the thermostat is dying. my 22re in my 4runner did that a bit and topping off the coolant and replacing the lower radiator hose fixed that. i have a spare thermo and can top off the coolant, might that have anything to do with the high idle? or could the revving be something different?

thanks for any help!
EDIT*** it has the carbureted 1.6l 4af motor
This is not Aaron's car is it?? painted flat black?
where on this carb should i look for the idle adjust screw, is it in the linkage, or on the body?
also, is ther a power steering conversion i can do to this car? something easily swappable from another model, or a bolt on kit or anything? i might like to have power steering in it.
The idle adjustment screw is near the black choke housing on the back side of carb. It is a long screw that sits at an angle and has a large head with groves around the edge. In addition to lowering idle you might want to look for vacuum hose leaks. Particularly pcv hose as it is large and sits low in manifold area to subject it to high heat to deteriorate it.
On your pics , do see the hose, with the hose clamp, off the valve cover that doens't go anywhere on your engine? that should go to the air cleaner stuff. Did he plug yours, or was it left open?
