4A / 7A throwing rods?

I bought a 7A-FE engine from my local U-pull it and when I gort home I realised that it had a hole in the block where #2 rod tried to leave the party. (I didn't check it. In a hurry trying to get out before they let the dogs out)
I have since that seen two 4A-FE engines at the same yard that others have pulled and after pulling them realised that they had also had rods trying to escape the confines of the block.

My question is, is this a common problem with these engines and what causes this?
Could it be the result of over revving? or did someone do a rebuild and not secure the rod caps correctly?

i wouldn't say its a common problem its the result of another problem... Oil burning, the engine in question will burn through its oil until theres none left then spin a bearing and boom! got swiss cheese.

I bought a used engine from the wrecker and after installation found out the bearings were totally gone...

If i were you i would think twice about dealing with this company because the engines should be run checked at the wrecker before they sell them otherwise who knows WTF your getting

Try www.car-part.com and find another engine in your area.... also search 7afe oil burning and know what your getting into with the engines

I've been dealing with these guys for about two years. They treaated me right when I did my Paseo engine into Tercel swap.
They sell any engine for $150, $25 extra for a gurantee. They told me that they weren't sure if this engine runs or not, but I made several mistakes in getting it. Haste was the first, not putting a wrench to the crank snaft pully was another.
The gurantee is only for an exchange, or credit. I have been back every week, but the only 7A they have gotten in is in a car that was in such a bad accident, that the transmission was broken in two. The forward mount was torn off the engine and several bolts broken in the block.

If they don't get one in soon, I might swap this engine for two transmissions ($75 each) Both my Tercel and my Corolla trannys seem to have bad synchronizers.

Exclamation

I once got a trans from a f$$#d crappy wrecking yard, the first gear syncro was a total POS. When I called them back they told me probably put the trans in wrong! I hate those F$$# cok$### That was a long time ago. I've had some real dumb FR's do and say the most rotten dumbass things... I took a crank out and had the journals cut .010 for new rod bearings. The a-hole sob's actually took the real oil journal, which has a opposite rotating thread as an oil throwback with a rope bearing seal , as the real engine seal. the SOB running the lathe cut that too! he ruined the SOB! I never ever told him to cut that! he ruined the whole f%$$# crank! There are so manhy bumb MFR's out there that should be shot on sight to save the human race from them passing on the dum FF$#$## gene.

Yeah, retiredat44.
I hear you. I have run into a few of those.
One of the lessons I have learnt in life is that not everyone that owns a tool box is a mechanic.

Listen to me.........The guy that pulled the engine with the hole in the side. LOL!!!
