1991 4afe To 5afe Engine Swap

Hello everyone

My name is Tim I recently just found this sight and have found it to be one of the best sights for Toyota info. I have a 1999 Tacoma TRD 4WD Xtracab that I drive 200 miles a day and it is getting ready to hit 200.0000 miles and still runs like a top !! It has been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned but with gas prices going out of control I need something better on gas.

So I just bought a 91 corolla Dx and it had a bad engine! so I bought one from one of those JDM companies ! My engine was a 4AFE 1600 cc engine with a automatic trans. The Engine I bought is a 5AFE 1500 cc engine not sure of the year or what trans was on engine but it came without a flywheel .

So with saying that my first question is how is the engine balanced ? Is internally balanced or externally balanced by the flywheel ? It seems to have a very slight vibration at higher RPM'S. Will say around 3000 to 3500 RPM "No Tac ". I never had the car running with original engine so I am not sure if that is normal or not .

My next question is the 5AFE engine came with a EGR port in the head my 4AFE did not have. I was told to just plug the hole so I did. I have heard that in some engines this can cause valve burning issues due to higher exhuast gas temperatures is this something to worry about with a 5AFE ?

My last question is witch injectors should I be using the one's from my 1600 cc engine or the ones from the 1500 cc engine .They are mounted in the head !

I have read a lot of the threads posted on this sight and have picked up allot of great info so far. I would appreciate any info that any one has to offer. Thanks for taking the time to read my question's .

Tim

hmmm... I myself wouldn't have bought the 5AFE as it's actually not as good as the 4A engines are, plus I don't think there are any parts available in North america for that motor.

Easiest way to get rid of the EGR is to pull the hose from the actuator.
