92 Cv Axle Problem

Hi guys,

I guess the first thing I should say is that I "DID" check the search thread, but I didn't find this problem. It's a 92 Corolla that I bought a week ago that had "NEW" axles... yeah right. Well I thought I had warped rotors because of brake pedal chatter/vibration, but I think it may be this problem. I had the wife put the car in drive with the wheels off on jack stands and noticed that the drivers side cv axle on the tranny side had a good wobble/grinding noise to it and the passengers side was smooth as silk.

Anyway, I was hoping that the cv axle was just worn, but now I'm thinking it may be the transmission, but anyway, I'm stuck with the tranny side joint in the tranny and I can't get it out!

Here's what I have now

Here's whats in my driveway after trying to "pop" the shaft out of the tranny

I've looked for the cv axle puller at NAPA, Checker, and Autozone, but nobody has one! I haven't checked Harbor Frieght, but I'm thinking that I may be screwed until I order the adapter that someone posted on a thread when I tried the search feature.

Any suggestions?

Not sure removing the side differential housing plate will gain anything. What is left of the shaft is being retained by a cir-clip. You would need to remove the differential housing itself. Is there any part of the axle sticking out that you apply a crow bar to and apply that popping force? How about the side body of the joint?

Have never seen an axle puller, but how about using a slid puller. Drill a hole in the axle joint housing and use a hook attached to a slide puller.

Yes, I saw the thread with the slide hammer/axle puller. I checked everywhere in town, but nobody carries it. I may have to order one.

About the slide differential plate... the manual mentioned something about "some" axles bolted on the xmission. The haynes manual wasn't very clear on what particular year had the bolt ons. I just took the plate off for insurance.

I think you can remove the tulip joint if you use a pry bar, hammer and improvise a fulcrum for the hammer. ITo do that I suggest using a jackstand to hold something metal up against the bottom of the frame - as in:

Thanks guys. I jacked the car up way higher and gave my prybar a good grinding to fit the inboard side. Worked like a charm! You guys are awesome!!!
