How To Crank Pulley Torque?

I need to torque the crank pulley on a 92 4AFE. How can I jam the flywheel to prevent the motor from turning? Do I have to remove the starter to do this? Is there another way?

It takes very little force to hold the pulley if you use an impact wrench, Jamming a belt with a piece of wood or a rag will do it. If you are trying to do things by the book and use a torque wrench, the book shows a service tool that bolts to the face of the crankshaft pulley using the two holes that are in it. You hold the pulley with this tool. I have never seen this tool for sale. The typical harmonic balancer puller won't work since it covers up the center bolt. Perhaps you could improvise something - perhaps a long bar with two harmonic balancer pullers bolted on it? My own experiments along these lines didn't work very well and the bolts that hold such a contraption to the pulley are seated only in the thin face of the back of the pulley and I worry about bending it. There are only a few cases where I would use an impact wrench instead of hand tools, but this is one of them.

Jam a screw driver.

Use a breaker bar for torque multiplication.

Might find or make a strap wrench that can go around the pulley. I took a piece of flat plate; cut holes in then bolted it to the balancer using the holes where the puller would install. One hole allows access to the pulley bolt. Suppose you could also use plywood.

I have always just jammed the flywheel, I have a little tool that's perfect for the job. I've never had any problems.

The strap wrench sounds good I think I'll try that. Punter how do you axcess the flywheel? I assume that you need to remove the starter?

Yea through the starter, I've got a small prybar that I've bent into a perfect shape.

Here's another way - The Olde Rope Trick:
Make sure one of the pistons is on the compression stroke, so the valves will be closed, and that the piston is somewhere other than the top. Then feed about 10 ft of rope down into that cylinder (make sure you leave enough sticking out!)

When you start tightening the pulley, the engine will turn until the rope locks it up. Torque it down, then back the engine up slightly and remove the rope.

Im with toymoyo. I own a piece of cr*p $69.00 stick welder I got from Harbor Freight and cut some sheet steel and manufactured the specieal tool. All it is is a piece of metal that looks like an open end wrench with two holes drilled in the claws. I bolted it in and used an impact wrench on pulley bolt and it came right off.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. The Haynes manual says you do not need a pully puller. I needed one. The three jaw does not work so good. I had to use a small one with a socket for a spacer. The 2 Jaw might work better. 10.00$ at HF again.
