WTB / In looking for a 3-Spd Auto Trans., do you expect at least SOME metal shavings?

Hey all, I've been looking at salvage yards for a replacement transmission. I drain the trans. fluid to check for burnt fluid and remove the 15-bolt pan to check for metal shavings. I've looked at five transmission pans now and they all have the same three magnets which I guess Toyota put there.

I understood that if there are shavings then the trans. wasn't well taken care of and you shouldn't use it. But every single pan had some very fine metal shavings on those magnets. That leads me to believe that it's normal to have the shavings, and Toyota must have put the magnets there to attract them. So does anyone have experience in this--are some metal shavings acceptable and normal in a good transmission?

Also, if anyone in IN, IL or KY has a 88 - 92 Corolla with a good 3-speed automatic trans. that you'd like to sell, pls send an e-mail or call me at 765 743-2584.

Doesn't anyone know?

Has anyone had experience in checking out the transmission pans? I still haven't heard from anyone.

Its not a big deal for auto trannies since its computerized. But for manual transmissions I would expect more metal shavings from driver's errors.
