supposedly, the header thermal wrap will give the car between 5 - 10 HP....i reeeally doubt this, but im going to wrap the exhaust headers anways....just to test it.....
but what i was wondering was, if i have the wrap on there, and the headers are stock, and i have the heat shield removed, will it get too hot and crack the exhaust mani.?? b/c ive gone to the junkyards a few times and have seen a LOTTT of cracked exhaust manifolds on the same year corolla..
AE92 1989 corolla DX 4AF engine..100% stock at the moment...
"supposedly, the header thermal wrap will give the car between 5 - 10 HP"
Not True!
haha, i agreeeeee...but....i just wanna kno actually a COUPLA things now....1st, are there any gains that i may notice from putting the thermal wrap on?
and
2nd, will it crack my exhaust manifold/headers due to overheating them internally??
someone, seriously answer my question though....i dont wanna waste $50 on some basically thermal tape and have it not work or make everything a lot more expensive by crackin the headers....
The OEM headers suck! I've managed to crack one and warp another on my AE86 in the 5 years I've owned it. Next time they go I'm getting after market like everything else I get now.
As for the tape don't bother if your car is stock. It won't do a damned thing for you. I don't even think it really does much any ways. Just a waste of money.

I would NOT put thermal wrap on any cast iron piece.
However, thermal wrap should be OK for tubular headers.
The benefit is mainly in having cooler engine compartment temps
rather than any exhaust efficiencies... but it does help some,
esp to get your exhaust temps up quickly.
There's a change that the header on an engine that old will crack if exposed to prolonged extreme temperatures from the wrap. I personally wouldn't risk it, but whatever you decide to do in the end is up to you.
The way an exhaust wrap works is it keeps the heat in the exhaust suystem instead of escapint into your engine compartment. It shouldn't have any effect on the longevity of your parts. Rember exhause parts are designes to get hot. keeping the heat in your exhause system may help to keep your engine slightly cooler, but unless you have had a lot of work done you will not notice it. On a stock header I say wait until you upgrade to an aftermarket header before you wrap it.
If the engine is extensively modified and race-prepped, then yes, even the smallest change will make a big difference. Since your engine is stock, not so much.
All it does it protect wires, sensors and brake parts near the extreme heat. For instance if you exhaust ran next to your starter, it would help with heat soaking. As for performance, I doubt it. Plus, looking at a stainless header is very nice :-D
