Questions about a short shifter

Hey folks,

I recently purchased a short shifter for my 94 Corolla from an online store. I have two questions:

1) So I took off my shift boot and visually compared the old shifter and the new. If anything, the new seemed somewhat taller, definitely not shorter than the old one. Did I get ripped off, or is there some magic here that I'm not aware of?

2) The store was supposed to send me instructions on how to do the replacement, but they didn't, and when I called them I was told to google it. Google's been uncharacteristically unhelpful. Does anyone here happen to have instructions on how to do it, like a pdf or something? I assume installing one short shifter for a particular model of car is much like installing any other short shifter for that same model. Would a Haynes manual for my car have the info I need?
