cold start RPMS

Friend of mine has an '04 corolla and it immediately jumps 2.5K on a cold start for a few seconds and then drops down to .5K for a few seconds before hovering at around .8K-1K. He says that it's also not unusual for the engine to start at 2.5K in the morning and then stay there until he pushes on the gas.

Any thoughts?

Mine revs to 2000 immediately on a cold start, then slowly settles back to normal idle around 600 once it warms up.

You live in California, you may not have one OR the temp is already warm enough to keep the motor at normal idle.

Yeah, my 03 does the same. It did catch me off guard the first few times, but everyone I poke to told me to relax.

Every single one of the Toyotas I gotten my hands on have done that. Cars like Mercedes and BMW (M3 cold start) don't do that. But the car I'm driving starts at 3k and thats only for the turbos

I've had an Accord, a Corolla, and a Cavalier all do that when cold.

Mine does exactly the same (well, my old '94 Camry). During the winter it revved up to around 2K, then eventually dropped to around 800.
