oil leak

I have a 1989 Corolla that I just bought for $1. No, that's not a misprint. It runs well and is being driven daily. I have a problem that needs attention. The first spark plug well in the valve cover (the one closest to the oil filler cap) fills with oil very quickly. Is the oil filler cap supposed to have a gasket, or is there another problem?

Cool

the 0-Ring in the valve cover, for the spark plug probably needs replaced.. you need to pull the valve cover off and fix or replace that o-ring.

The plastic oil filler cap where you add oil to the engine has no gasket. The metal well around the plug does have seals. Can you tell if the oil comes in from the top of the well or from the bottom?

Thanks to all for the tips! I'll pull the valve cover and replace the spark plug gaskets. I'll let you know if that solves the problem.
