Thumbs down 89 corolla SUDDEN DEATH...i reallly need help now...

it wont start, and i dont know why...probably acoupla hours ago maybe??

it was fairly hot, and then began idling real strange...this mornin, it was idlin smooothly @ a good solid 1200. (ths mornin)

then, acoupla hours ago, it was idling erradically and reallly low...then died. then wouldnt start....then i let it cool for acoupla more hours, b/c sometimes itll start once it cools down..
so i start crankin it....and im crankin....and crankin.....and STILL crankin....
so, i then go for the starter fluid....
NOTHING.
then, i fill the tank w/about a 1/3 of a gallon of gas....
and i go to crank it, and then it FINALLY STARTS!!
but then it dies...almost immediately...

so i finally give up...but not quite! i go back to try it AGAIN...
and then, the starters not crankin, or makin noise so......
i conclude;

ITS DEAD.
milage: 232, 343....

oh yeah....and i also forgot to mention....

when it was working a few hours ago, i noticed it smokin from somewhere near the intake manifold...idunno if tht helps or not...is there even a slight possibility that the problem is the EGR?????

but yea...just tried it again...its CRANKIN!
but still no engine...

oh, and when you rev it slooooowwwly, to ~3 or 4,000RPMS, it runs 100% perfectly smoooth
its from ~2000RPMS and lower is when it doesnt work right..

lol, OH and, if any mechanics would like to talk to me tonight about this, my AIM is madking411..

It ain't tech support here dude, no one is awaiting your call 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. Give people time to respond.

Could be anything, take it to a mechanic or try to see what engine codes you can pull from the ECU.

I just realized your car is carburated, no ECU to pull codes from.. your carb could be done for and needs a rebuild. Your best bet find a mechanic or someone who deals with Toyotas.

but, its strange to me, that if it needs a re-build so badd, why does it work when the car is cool, or if its in the higher rpms? lol...or, if i pull the throttle cable to fullthrottle MANUALLY with my hand from inside the enginebay for ~10 - 15seconds and then try starting it??
(it doesnt really WORK...it just gets the engine to crank properly, and idle/sustain itself for at least 10 or 15 seconds...enuf time for me to get in the hood and attempt to re-tune a lil bit before it dies again)

check the basics

1. am i getting fuel crank it over some pull a plug does it smell like gas? and is it wet with gas ?

2. am i getting spark?? with the same plug you just took out connect the wire and lay the plug against a metal part have someone crank the engine don't let it start....

if everything checks out ok here i have a few other ideas

1. grounding problems this sounds a little like the engine isn't being grounded properly.... to test this put a jumper cable (just one lead) one end solidly on the engine and the other end on the negative ( - ) battery post now try to start it and run it if it starts try disconnecting the cable if it dies or starts running funny then this is definately the problem...... so reground the engine...

2. timing belt skipping and the cams have lost timming.... take off the valve cover or a timing cover and inspect, rotate the engine to inspect parts of the belt you cant see

3. one i have seen a fair bit bad coils and or ignition modules to test with the engine dead cold start it and let it run, take a hair drier and heat the distributor with it if it dies when hott then get a small bag with some ice and cool it back down see if it will start if so then its your coil and or module (if there both in the distributor) if the car has a seprate ignition module repeat by cooling it down see if it starts then warn it with a hair drier and see if it dies then if it does cool it with ice if it starts you probably found your problem replace the heat sensitive part....

if you don't have one consider a haynes or chilton manual for your car they are a valuble resource in figuring stuff like this out ....

if it works when it cools down it can be the ignition module...

However diagnosing problems via computer is hard, because you cant see or have hands-on the problem.
