Thumbs up 1989 corolla dx has a 4th gear?!!!

i didnt know it did, until i was in THIRD gear, i kno it for a fact...then i FLOORED it, and the thing revved up to 6300, in third gear, then shifted AGAIN!!! i was like !!!!
haha...o yea, and the thing actually kicked into a ''powerband'' too, like i actually felt the thing start accellerating more and more when i floored it right before the shift point

who woulda thot that a car with less than 100 HP could actually be FUN??

oh yea, and if u remember my s/n, yes, i was the one who wrote the thread, ''todays the last day im drivin a corolla''....well, it wasnt my last day...its sort of a long story, but to shorten it, basically, i took the thing to the mechanic, he replaced the fuel pump, and then re-tuned it..Thing is, he doesnt know how to tune a carb very well at ALL..so, i re-tuned it up, and its all workin smoothly now...hehh good ole Toyota, i knew the thing couldnt have gone out like that....but im still gettin the new pontiac, so NOW i kan finally say, ''TOMORROW is REALLY gonna be the last day i drive a corolla..."
so, basically, now my dad gets it...until he gets HIS car fixxed up that is.
Thn, we're gonna sell it (the corolla)

They are more fun with a manual tranny!

Does your car have O/D?
If it does, that is a 4-th gear. If it doesn't then what you are experiencing is probably a lock-up torque converter

On many of the Toyota transmissions they have a clutch in the torque converter that locks-up to give a direct drive without slippage at a certain torque load (high road speed, light throttle). This greatly helps fuel economy, and on some cars really feels like another gear engaging, but is not. When the lock-up is engaged and you step-on-it, it feels like it is down shifting as the clutch releases. Then you have fluid drive through the torque converter and not a direct drive.

The engagement should be so smoothe that you hardly notice it, but on higher milage trannys it can get rough so you feel it.

My '90 Camry (214K miles) feels like it shifts into a 5th gear when the lock-up engages, but it has a 3-spd with O/D and lock-up converter.

ohhhhhhhh...WOW, thats a pretty gud explanation . Verrry helpful, hehe. Well, id say thats probably exactly what it was then, in THAT case, because, the tranny is a lil bit higher mileage.....the car has over 220,000 miles on it, but the tranny only has ~100,000 on it, cuz it was replaced a while back...

Yeah. Don't feel bad, you are not alone
I once heard a guy swear his automatic Camry had a 5th gear.
