My 2001 Corolla LE recently had a serious problem. In hot weather, say, in the afternoon, when I started the engine, it worked allright while parking shifted, but after it is shifetd to Drive or Back, the engine was turned off suddenly after a very short distance. I had to put everything back to parking position, then restarted the engine, it worked OK! It seems this peonomenon won't happen in cool weather such as in the morning. What could be wrong with my car? Could it be the bad transmission lube oil? By the way, the check light is on for a while.
There is a switch connected to the shifter mechanism that prevents you from starting the engine with the shifter in any position other than neutral or park. If this switch is loose or bad, it might cause problems with starting, but I doubt that is your problem since it only affects the starting circuit, and not the ignition.
Is your idle speed correct?
Does it happen when the engine is cold, hot or both?
I agree with Flashnm, have the check engine light checked out.

Well, I had my car checked today. Unfortunately, the computer could not read the CEL out. Again, the phenomenon is, the engine will be turned off in the HOT weather during the starting stage, after the engine is restarted, it could be much better, even no problem. While running, the car is all right. My question is, why it happens only in hot weather? What could be wrong? I would like to have some tips before I send my car to the dealer, because their computer scaning will cost me almost 100 bucks.

Hi, Donald,
It happens when the engine is cold, but the weather is hot.
It could be something in your fast idle circuit.
It could also be your EGR valve sticking open.
Since you have a check engine light, the best thing to do is have that checked out. That will help narrow the trouble shooting proces down quite a bit.

Okay, my experience is with the 1981 model. Does vapor lock still exist as a problem with new cars?
I don't think so.
Most fuel injection systems run between 35 and 45 psi, some a lot more. so there isn't much chance for vapor lock.
