Blown head gasket sealer? Retraction
I would like to retract a statement I made a while back. My girlfriend overheated and blew the head gasket on (could have been a stuck thermostat) her 93 corolla that has 135,000 mile on it. I did not think this car was worth the 1500$ a mech would charge to fix it(paints faded and the grill is knocked out). One mechanic I went to said try some head gasket sealer what do you have to loose. I went to the local parts store where they said they have a local landscaper co. that comes in all the time and buys it and swears he gets another 70,00 miles out of it. I gave it a shot and posted in here what great stuff it was. That was about 20,000 miles ago. Well the car overheated again for good. Aafter reading some of these posts I see some of you folks feel thats not that many miles for a yota. After standing in front of the open hood for a while looking at the motor I decided to try doing the head gasket myself. I am an IT person but worked in an automotive machine shop just tearing motors down as a kid and R and R tranny's a little later. Though I am not a mechanic by a long shot I thought I would try the gasket myself. (I now have a great respect for professional mechanics) Anyhow after taking a few parts of every weekend I finally got to take the head off. About 60% of every water port in the gasket was sealed shut. I dont know how the car ran at all. If you need your car for more than 30 days do not use that stuff. I am having the head pressure tested and checked for surface (though i measured .0035, .0015 out of spec) and have not got the head back yet. I will post if anyone cares if this car ever runs again. I am going to change the T belt, tensioner and water pump even though it was done at 90,000. One more thing most people i think dont even mention is I had to seperate the intake from the head which required me to unbolt the throttle body is to clean the throttle body in this process as well. Wish me luck and if you think that stuff works. ***ettaboutit.
