1978 Corolla trouble w/ choke

Hello-

When I start my 1978 Corolla, it idles really high. When I tap the accellerator, the Idle does not drop. If I drive the car for a good 30 mins it sometimes drops to a good low idle. Other times I'll drive all day and it will still be idling high. Any Ideas??

Thanks,
Marty

Check your choke adjusment , it looks like it is over adjusted . loose the 3 screws and turn the choke to the right until you see the plate start opening and stop. the car is suppose to start acelerated all the time. when it is cold.

The choke on my 1987 had an electric element inside the housing to gradually open the choke. If yours has the same setup check the housing to see if it gets hot yo the touch. If not it could have a bad element inside or a bad electrical connection where it hooks up. Another possibility is the linkage could be gummed up . Try cleaning it with carb cleaner.

I loosened the three screws and made the adjustment, but it didn't change anything. I'll try cleaning it up and see how that works.

Would it be wise to keep to just disengage the choke altogether?

sounds like your pulloff is bad, its a round thingie with a vacuum hose on it, take the filter housing off and put a piece of hose in your mouth and put the other end on the pulloff and see what one wont move when making a suction or drops back down and wont stay up

On my 1979 Corolla, there was a metal tube that brought heat to the carburetor area. The tube would errode and then debris would come in. That caused the symptom you mention. Cleaning things only worked for a short time until the tube was replaced.

Look at the top of the carb and check to see if the flop in top is open or closed. If open it should not start acelerated and if closed what it does is restrict air into the system this way making it start acelerated. If is still closed and after warming is still acelerated that means that needs to be open more until the car idles normaly.
