Angry probs with my Corolla

Hi
Need some help please.

I was driving home from work and my '82 Corolla sedan started to play up. First thing I noticed was when I went to speed up to pass car nothing happened, kinda like a dead spot then it was ok.
A couple of km's further and the engine started to miss and every time I tried to accelerate too much there was a weird noise coming from under bonnet. The noise goes when I push clutch in and also stop trying to rev the motor. It was missing so badly I was back to low gear to get up the lil hill to my house.

I put new fuel filter and plugs in thinking might have been that but nope, no difference.

Thought perhaps auto choke so warmed enging uo and checked if choke had shut off. Yep it had.

Trying to start it I have to hold accelerator flat or it won't fire, but when I press auto choke closed then turn ignition it starts ok.

The car didn't get hot but I have checked oil/water in case blown head gasket but looks good.

Cheers
Tassie

Have you tried checking your temp. gauge? Maybe you are over heating thats why your hearing weird noise under the bonnet. Then your idle is dying plus loss of power. Those are signs of poor cooling system, try to check if your fan placed in the toyota fan shroud is working, If not then you need it to be checked by your electrician.

Could be your vacuum and centrifical advance on the distributor. To check centrifical advance remove cap and move rotor by hand and see if it springs back when released. If not could have weak springs or the pivot points could use lubricating. Also the vacuum advance unit diaphram or vacuum lines running it to it could be leaking. Check your timing with a timing light and see if it advances when accelerating. The noise you hear could be engine pinging due to the distributor not advancing the timing. Check a manual for more specifics/pics on how to check /repair the centrifical and vacuum advance.
