Motor oil for diff?

Hi: After experiencing vibrations in the auto tranny of a 2000 Corolla VE, the family mechanic found some wear on washers located within the differential. The parts are not sold alone and the whole thing is too expensive.

The mechanic asked around and some said to use SAE50 motor oil for the differential, so the thicker fluid would compensate for the wear. I see the logic in that statement but using motor oil for a differential doesn't sound good to me.

Is this sound advice, shouldn't gear oil be better for the job?

have a parts store look up in the auto parts book what the OEM fluid or Oil needs to be. Don't go on anything else.

Everyone knows what's OEM, but I read here that people have used 75W-90 for the diff. as an upgrade.

So, any problems with that?

It all depends whether the diff shares fluid with the trans or not.
If it does, you can't.
If it doesn't, give it a shot.
You can always drain and run gear oil if the problem continues.

^ yeah except I dont think I'd do something just because I read it online. Theres lots of misinformation going around. I'd go for OEM, unless different stuff was needed.

OK people, seems like no reading from the beggining? I'll retake...

The diff has some worn parts and a shop recommended using SAE50 motor oil, which I found odd. OEM indicates using DEXRON III for the diff, which is the same as the tranny, but they are in separate compartments.

At this forums some people mentioned using 75W-90 gear oil as upgrade. Now, does using 50 motor oil sounds good, or is it better to use gear oil?

I read it from the beginning. Two things 1) Are you sure the wear wasnt normal, that the problem wasnt something else 2) Why do you insist on doing something different than what the factory says.

You asked for my opinion and I gave it.

he insists on doing other than factory specs because he doesn't want to pay to fix it due to the price

Yeah well you cant turn shit into chocolate, meaning if its already worn out, there really isnt "quick-fixes" to repair the damage, other than replacing them.

yeah but it can help you hold it over till you can afford it :p, you and I save on labour because we do the work ourselves, Some guys don't have the room and sometimes the knowledge or tools to do the work and have to pay the labour which on the toyota cars costs a fair ammount

It can also cause havoc and cause added expenditures in the form of something else broken.

Toyota appears to have recommended either Dexron or 75W-90 depending on what fluid was used in the transmission. If you go the thicker oil route use a non-detergent oil to minimize frothing. Make sure the diff and trans have separate oil compartments. Did the mechanic take the diff apart and inspect the parts?

Yes, the mechanic confirmed they have separate compartements and already decided to try the gear oil. It's really odd that other mechanic recommended SAE 50 motor oil, which no one seems to comment about; maybe cause it's too ridiculous.

I guessed if something else than Dexron, then something used for differentials. We'll see.

Well, remember many people installs and replaces with things different than the factory says...Nitro anyone?

Just a small example.
