USA Check Engine LIgnt - Everyone's favorite

Greetings,

Quick question. I'm trying to work on a friends 00' corolla. If they disconnected the battery to temporarily "turn-off" the check engine light, will the code readers pick up any codes that existed before?

Or...do I have to wait for the light to come back on before checking the codes?

thanks people.

try scanning it, but probally are going to have to wait. If the battery wasnt unhooked for a very long time the code may be dormant in their so you could still scan it.

If you're doing this to try and pass a smog check, the testing device has a way to know if the computer has been cleared recently or not, and you'll still fail.

it's actually to look into a fuel pump issue...and perhaps other things...we'll see.

my friend did that for his car, and it passed smog....weird huh.

but thanks for the info.
