brake-transmission interlock

I am new here and my first post is for my mom's 97 corolla, not mine.

The auto transmission interlock stopped working when pressing the brake. She has to use the over-ride button with a screw driver. what should i look for to fix this.

any help is greatly appreciated.

When you step on the brakes does the red tail lights light up? If not, it's your stop light switch.

Fixed it, thanks

Your suggestion led me to also check the brake light fuse which was blown. Then I inspected the break light bulbs. The contact on one of the bulbs had softened/melted until it contacted the ground connedtor.Thank you again
