Im going to look at an AE86 tonite

Ive been reading about these awesome little cars (thanks moto) for about a year and a half and with the MR2 I need a daily driver, so might as well go with something im familiar with

I left a note on one and it didnt turn out, but a friend of a friend is selling his for 2200$ and is suposedly in good shape. The main thing thats attracted me to this one is the fact hes replaced many many parts which means bringing it back to stock quality wont require 4000$+ - or so I assume before I see it.

He sent me pics and its a nice black with mesh rims - 4 summer and 4 winter tires on rims is another good selling point. The KM's are high at 250,000 but the oil has been changed monthly and its all highway commuter KM;s (I believe this because he lives 50 mins from work)

My main concern is rusty fenders and strut towers in particular - he said the sun roof was the only rusty part but it has been replaced with one from the US. I know the car will need many parts replaced but i can be handy with a wrench and I have a few good toyota friends who are really good guys willing to lend a hand.

Anything else I should look for tonite?

To be honest... It doesn't matter how many parts he's replaces if the shell is in crappy condition

remember, mechanical and suspension parts are a dime a dozen... its the shell that matters

I have 1 good shell right now and a pile of parts... the parts i can find more of... the shell is another story

High KM? who cares... a 20v is like 600 without a wiring harness... 4ag's are dirt cheap.. and they arn't that terribly difficult to swap out

post some pics, I might want to have a look too

If you can get the carpet up, check the joints between the floorpan and under the doors. My GTS hatch has a pretty big seperation on the driverside, i'm going to have to strip the whole car and send it out to be all welded up. Perhaps spot welded too

But yeah, depending on the rust of the sunroof, it might be rusted around it, on the surrounding roof. You will have to cut the roof out and replace it, I should know this because we have a 240 coupe that has to have this done. Expensive and a pain in the arse.

If the body is good, like Trueno_Sprinter said, mechanicals are a dime a dozen, so don't worry about that, worry about the actual shell. That's what really matters when buying one.

Good luck with it.

Look inside the engine bay. The brake cylinders leaks from these cars and could of eaten through the paint leading to a hole on the driver side of the engine bay. I have this hole and so does uras. I thought my car was mint till I saw the hole.
Luckily, it should be an easy fix but just a pain in the ass.

Hey guys,

Well myself and a friend looked over the car and overall it looks good for a 1986 econobox

The Good:

- very little rust on exterior, very minor
- no rust on strut towers or holes through the body
- all the little things like pop up lights and sunroof work (cept for horn)
- its been undercoated like crazy
- engine feels wonderful, it just begs to be reved and responds which is a nice change from turbo lag...i love the 4AG
- clutch grabs well
- the sweetest 15" mesh rims with summer tires w/ a nice dish and even 4 winter tires on 14" rims (huge selling point, all new tires)
- will come with two headlight motors (one works, the other doesnt) stereo and speakers.

The Bad:

- underbody had a coating of rust
- dunno if she'll pass emissions
- the area where the jack is stored has about a litre of water in it!
- brakes felt a little wonky even tho they are relatively new...maybe cuz its been sitting since march?
- Asking price of 2200$

I have two pictures but nowhere to host...can someone host them?

how did the water get in?

i'd tear the crap out of the interior first, have a good look and poke at the floor, crazy undercoating is a good way to make holes patched with pizza boxes go unnoticed

250,000km - all highway, and i belive since the owner has a 1h 15min comute into Ottawa to work every single day.

I dunno how the water got it, thats for me to find out Ill have it solved by winter which is important

I didnt pull up any front carpets, I actually meant to but forgot, however I pulled up the carpet in the back of the hatch and it looked and felt solid.

Two things if i had to nit pick (sp) would be the black colour (i hate black cars...the worst colour IMO - hides the lines) and its a hatch...I really wanted a coupe since people who really know would know, and the wannabes wouldnt, but with these cars being picky is NOT an option

-- EDIT --

Heres a pic of the car, I only have hosting at we-todd-id...highlight the link and copy/paste
