I'm not sure whether this questions been beat to death or not... did a quick search and came up with none. If there are faq/ssticky's or good threads about this info please direct me or tell me better keywords to search.
Basically are Toyota OEM oiil filters good? I'm about to buy a dozen for $30-35 and I don't want to use crap filters. I just got my rolla 10k miles ago at 130k and it's been what it's supposed to be Been taking care of her and she's been good at her age.
Also what motor oil do you guys suggest? Nothing too fancy and expensive but looking for the best quality for the money that'll keep that engine purring
It's actually more important to keep up with the oil changes (as in changing them on time). OEM filters are good, and it's a general given for almost all car manufacturers. As for oil, stick with a brand name that you feel comfortable with. I consistently use Castrol for my Corolla and it's been fine. It has 301000+ mi on it...
I like the OEM filters and WIX filters(NAPA gold/nascar) all i can say with oil is don't cheap out buy a brand name, also if your running a 93-97 7a-fe or a early 98-02 1zz-fe you might wanna consider Synthetic as both these engines are prone to oil burning and ring problems

Ah when she was in her glory, Not so nice anymore 358k 17years old her time is getting short ....
I have a 94 4afe prizm. 3spd. I got it at 130k, it was well taken care of and since I got it, I got timing belt and water pump done, done a few things fix a/c, change oil regularly, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve, thermostat(this was needed as it was stuck open).
all i really need is new brakes all around and it'll will be good... however one of the screws that hold the exhaust manifold is stripped and i gotta get that retapped because it's a decent exhaust leak.
heli coil it, should be easy, buy the kit, like $10 at a chain parts store, has drill bit, tap and installer, drill out hole, tap, insert and bolt, easy, one afternoon, 6 pack job. might have a small problem getting a drill in between engine and rad.
thanks a lot angry for the advice. i'll try that, hopefully it wont be a hardwork getting the drill in. It's accesible but not sure exactly how much space i'll need.
One thing about brand name oils though. It doesnt matter if it says mobil 1 or castrol if it doesnt apply to the standards.
Look for API SL/SM for gasoline engines and CL/CM for diesels. Or then the ACEA B4/B5 or the earlier B3 (which is inferior to B4) for diesels (not bad for gasoline ones) or atleast the A3 gasoline norm, A5 is the best
that's some good advice flashmm, yeah i was kinda going just based on brands. But now that I did a little search for API SL/SM there's somethign more substantial to look at.
Thanks
1 more thing, does anyone know what thread size holds in the exhaust manifodl to the engine? I'm going to look for a helicoil thing as angry suggested, TY
Okay I didn't want to make a new thread but still looking for suggestions to my latter problem. Thanks a lot for the great advice on the oil and i'll be looking for api sl/sm from now on!
Anyway, I'm getting ready to fix the stripped thread on the front of the engine block, but as someone stated that the drill might not have enough space for me to drill. So one of my friends suggested that I just find a helicoil that fits the thread now and then use a different screw size to avoid drilling... or just doing it the real way and take the radiator and radiator support off then work on it...
what do you guys think? I'm not sure how long it will take to take off the radiator and radiator support so you guys think just the extra trouble will be worth to do it right and not take short cuts?
With respect to the OEM oil filter, remember that most car manufacturers dont make components and accessories themselves. Usually its handed out to a reputable manufacturer. For example TOYOTA uses DENSO for a lot of electrical equipment, so no doubt, the oil filter would have been made by FRAM or another company.
Personally I use FRAM filters, I'm not sure who TOYOTA buys theirs from.
