I am thinking about importing a 1997 - 1999 toyota corolla Levin (AE111, BZR) 6 speed manual from Japan. It seems like they are quite reasonably priced but I have found it hard to get concrete information on them. I know they have a 1.6 20v quad throttle engine which produced 123 kW but that is about as much as I know. It seems like a a really good car but there are so many unknowns: all disc brakes? ABS? 0 - 100 times?
Does anyone know where I can find some of this information?
well if the ae101 and ae111's are anything like the ae86 and ae92 there will be 2 different models such as we had here. The lower one usually had different rear brakes, different motor, different seats, and so on
Becareful, Alot of people (in japan normally) put BZR stickers on there cars when they sell them. When infact they are only BZG's or BZV's.
BZR's are a bit special, not rare, but just better.
On a BZR you get the 6spd with LSD, superstrut suspension (which means bigger brakes), a recaro interior, and different tail lights. Drivers airbag is standard I believe. ABS is optional. So before you hand over the money find out if its a real one or not.
With a good driver and decent tyres they run a low 15 1/4 mile so they are pretty good for a 1.6

Thanks for the info guys. Flashmn, thats exactly the info I was looking for. I honestly was not being lazy, just a bit new to this and not sure of where to look for info,
From one of the stickies, and the comments in this thread, it sounds like toyota may have played with the numbers for the power output.
Does anyone have any opinions on it? Is it a good daily driver sports car? Aparently the quad throttle makes the engine sound mad, has anyone sat in one?
True, its no twin turbo supra or MR2 GT. However, saying that, statistics claim that the MR2 GT does 1/4 mile times in the high 14s and punter is claiming that the AE111 is in the low 15s. Seems pretty quick to me.
Blitz still offers a complete turbo kit for the AE111 with blacktop....supposedly 305whp but I could never find any documentation on it....and IIRC there is some kind of problem with that kit on a 6spd....not to mention the 6spd can't handle much more abuse than stock.

Even the very first ('89) turbo MR2's can do 12's on the standard turbo. This places MR2 GT's in a different league.
Weigh up all your options, what do you actually want from the car?
Levins are well built, reliable, economical, fun little cars, and the blacktop really is a great engine.
But their strength does not lie in straight line speed.
The 6speed LSD box is not the strongest box, and any sort of competition use will number it's days. (they strip the crown wheel, don't know why.)

with a blacktop 20v, i would strictly stick to n/a mods. any forced induction and you're just asking for trouble in a high compression engine. weight from the turbo or supercharger would upset the delicate balance of the stock car.

Delicate balance.. rofl... considering even the driver adds (in most cases) about 200lbs to a car, can you say delicate balance in the same sentence? Also a turbo or supercharger dont really weigh that much, I can pick them up with one hand.

Well I stand corrected

Yeah I guess thats good advice. I really need to decde whether I want a serious sports car like an MR2 or something that will be a bit of fun to throw around the odd corner. I guess nomatter what I get, it has to be better than my current 94 Honda Civic GLi
