Trans or Clutch

Today, my 160k mileage Corolla made a loud noise under the car while driving, It felt like the bottom dropped out, and was virtually undriveable. I was able to make it to the shop to park it (its sunday) driving very slowly in 2nd gear.

Despite the load noise, the engine light is not on and it is driveable, albeit slow. When I push in the clutch while idling, a "whining" noise goes away however if I disengage the clutch pedal while idling a whining noise is there.

The engine runs fine while idle, no kicking or stalling, however unable to engage the gear into reverse at all.

Any thoughts if this is a clutch replacement or transmission related is appreciated.

Your best bet is to take it to a tranny shop who specializes in it because they can tell you right away what it is. Sometimes it's something as simple as a fluid change, yours sounds worse than that, but you never know.

Yea, I parked it at the local mechanic shop. They will look at it in the morning.

I was thinking it was the clutch, have had recent "overthrow bearing" noise, however the loud sound under the body while driving makes me think otherwise. Not certain a clutch failure would make such a noise, yet it is driveable.

Hopefully, not a complete loss.

Thanks

"throw-out bearing" not "overthrow bearing"

If the clutch failed you would have no drive at all.

It sounds like your gearbox is eating itself. Not good!
I would suggest geting one from a salvage yard, that should cost you a lot less than a rebuild.

Good luck, let us know what the mechanic says.

Local shop sez its the transmission. Need to take it over to the trans man in town to see what the damage is to see if its worth the cost of repair. 160k miles, thinking if not too much, could get another 160k !

Thanks
