Hey guys, here's the deal. I have a 4A-GE 20V Silvertop w/ auto tranny swapped into a '96 AE101 Corolla. Last weekend my tranny completely blew out, ie. no gears, nothing, not even park was engaging.
I managed to have it replaced, but the unavailability of another 20V tranny made me resort to using a "4A" tranny (that's what the used spares place had marked on it..they didn't specify 4AF or 4AG). It's the same bolt up and everything but, the neutral safety switch was different from mine so I only managed to splice in the neutral start connectors and the reverse lights.
here are my symptoms:
1. whether the overdrive button is on or off, there's no gear change but I'm STILL getting 4 gears in "D"
2. when the gear selector is in "2", it still shifts 1st to 2nd to 3rd and holds 3rd
3. when the selector is in "L", it shifts from 1st to 2nd and holds 2nd
is it at all possible that I may have scored a 5spd auto tranny by mistake?
does Toyota even make 5fwd auto trannies for the 4A?
then here's the other thing:
now the overdrive plug is connected to the harness, but like I said whether the button is on or off, I still get 4 foward gears in "D". I've never had a "PWR/ECON" selector switch in the car but the last tranny used to shift at 7500rpm at WOT and this one only shifts at 5000rpm at WOT. What would be possible reasons for this?
Your selector cable might not be adjusted correctly and so when you think you are in "L" you are actually in "2". Just a thought, check that and see.
Does it lock and start in park, start in neutral, does reverse work?
Check your throttle valve cable (down shift cable) for adjustment too, that will affect the WOT shift point.

that can't be it...it only starts in Park and Neutral...reverse works fine
basically, the positions on the selector are all as they should be, the shifter cable isn't on any kind of strain...it's just that for "L", "2" and "D" I'm getting one more gear than I'm supposed to be getting
and what about the shifting at 5000rpm thing? will that have something to do with the wiring?
L=1st
2=1st and 2nd
D w/ OD off=1st, 2nd, and 3rd
D w OD on=1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
an additinal bump you feel after 4th above 45mph is the torque converter applying which on some transmissions is more apparent than on others. on mine its pretty notiicable when it applies and when it disengages since theres about 100-200 rpm difference at times.

Yeah, my Camry's torque converter lock-up clutch engages really solidly too, making you think that there is a 5th, but he is saying that he is getting another gear even in "L". That is really strange, maybe that really is a special tranny, or there is something wrong in the valve body.

sometimes in L mine will shift to 2nd and sometimes it wont. ive adjusted my kickdown cable tension so it no longer does that.
I am not sure, but I think that shouldn't be. Maybe there is somethig worn in the valve body.

nah, my trans is fine. it was only under a very certain cirumstance that it would upshift...or maybe i'm remembering 2 which also has 1...i dunno, its been soo long since i've messed around with that. since adjusting the cable tension, it holds gears more how i want it to.
well, I disconnected the shifter cable last night and shifted the tranny by hand to see how many positions I'm getting and it turns out there are 6 gear positions and not 7 which means it's a 4spd tranny so that leaves valve body or electrical
had an electrician look at it this morning and apparently the quacks that wired the swap just wired it enough to start and then condemned a whole bunch of wires..you guys should've seen how they butchered that harness!
so Thursday is the day to re-wire everything the way it should be and we'll see what comes of it after that
Sounds like you are making progress, that is good.
Good luck.

A241E or A245E or A246E? i almost by heart know the pinout for the A245E since i had to rewire my harness, it had been cut and taped together, it rotted, and i had to buy a new block and set of wires and rewire the thing, PITA but it fixed my random check engine light and intermittent no starts! the starter lockout wires (PNP switch) had rotted and would cause no starts sometimes.
alright, does it have a wire harness with 2 large black wires and some green and other colored wires (large gray connector block) and then ANOTHER black connector block with only 3 wires?
