Australia Oil leaks - thoughts? (with pics)

Hi all,

2 separate leaks on my 97 Corolla.

ONE: I think is my stupidity for not keeping a closer 'containment' of oil when I change the filter (which would explain it being dirtry down bottom, but clean on top part of sump), but I just want to see what people think, and;

TWO: on the transmission.

Any thoughts from anyone????

Thanks heaps. Great forum, helpful people, great backlog of posts.

ONE (btw, noob question: what is that hose coming out of the sump????)

TWO

Question

Tranny leak: check your flange seals, your half-axle seals, where the axle goes into the tranny. is that an auto or manual trans, what kkind of oil is the leaky stuff? Look up, from underneath with car on jacks, and look at the seals,, are they wet with oil?

Engine oil on oil pan: can be valve cover oil, or accumulation from doing sloppy oil changes. Only way to tell is to clean the engine very good, and watch where it comes from, it's to hard to find leaks when oil is everywhere. if/when you clean engine, cover electronics. Pick your method of cleaning. Of you use high pressure water, be very careful where you point it. (sorry, thought I would point that out).

It's a manual. Was planning on cleaning it all off, and keeping an eye on it, but wanted to get some pics first 'for history sake'.
Not sure on the type of oil it is - I'm not brilliant at determining the type, but will give it a try.
Will put car up again and have a squizz at all the seals.

Thanks. No need to be sorry - I've started to clean out the engine this weekend, and it's a right royal pain in the a**e - 205,000kms worth of crap on it. I don't want to go the option of covering and doing a big spray as, knowing me, i'll miss something, and bugger something up. So, i'm going slowly but 'softly' as it were.

thanks again for the response - will have more of a poke around when I get a chance.

cya
