Water pump replacement extravaganza

Hi, I'm pretty new here. I am replacing the water pump on a friends 94 corolla. I am having a heck of a time figuring out how to get the timing chain cover off. The waterpump pulley prevents the plastic from coming out, but there really isn't enough room to pull the pulley. I'm used to working on german cars and diesels, so I was a little embarrased after I told my friend it was a 40 minute job, we are on hour 7 or so. Anyone have experience with this?

94's are a timing belt, and from what i can see the timing belt cover doesnt cover the water pump.

which engine is this? 4afe or 7afe?

The 94 Corolla has a timing belt. The timing belt cover is 3 parts. Unless you were changing the timing belt, I don't believe you need to remove all the covers. You only need to remove the crankshaft pulley to remove the lower timing belt cover, if you were replacing the timing belt.

Remove the upper timing belt covers, and you should be able to access the water pump.

Yes the water pump pulley has to come off to get the middle timing cover off... the way i get the pulley off is with a 10mm wrench from the underside of the car by holding the pulley with a oil filter wrench, or a strap wrench or last resort using the belt around the pulley and holding it or by loosening the bolts right off first thing while the belts are still on everything.

its a bitch the water pump has to be the 2end biggest PITA on a gen 7, first being the rear engine mount...

that's why it's a good time to replace the timing belt and bearing along with the water pump, since you have it aparts anyways...
