$6,000 drift machine?

Any one read the article in Sport Compact Car this month? There is an article on how some guy build a track worthy AE86 for $6,000. This magazine has a reputation of converting prices in Canada for us Canadian readers that do not use USD.

This $6k does not includ the buy price of the car though. Also the car was originally a SR5 wich was made in 1984. The car now pumps out 142 hp at the wheels.

I'd doubt it's do-able for that price.

Supoose you start with a GTS so you don't have to factor in the cost of a conversion.

- machine work on motor (head p/p, milling; overbore) $1000
- cams would be $500
- pistons $500
- TRD headgasket $100
- Cam gears $200
- TRD headers $400
- ITBs $200
- Fuel Pump $200
- exhaust $500
- SAFC $400
- TRD LSD $500
- TRD bushings $400
- shocks/springs $500
- brakelines $100
- tires mounted and balanced $400
- JDM bumpers $1000

That's not even the whole list of stuff and it's already upto $6900. The prices I'm estimating are lower then market price, Jubiride parts have not been listed and would be on the more expensive side, and no labour prices have been factored in. So unless you have some CRAZY hookups, don't expect to achieve what they claim to have done without double the money.

magazines ALWAYS say they built some car for under X dollars, and it's always a little questionable.. afterall, they are trying to sell magazines (often times to highschool kids who like to dream)..

i've read countless articles in hot rod mag that were about building a 12 second car for this much or a 300 hp motor for that much. .. but i never did build any car

if you're patient and look for a good car to start off with for not too much money, you can build a nice 86 with $6000.. just not THAT nice.

he said he bought the car a while ago when they were worth ten cents. They had a quote something to the effect of "nowadays you cant find a rusted out ae86 for 3000". which is quite true. he also could have known some guys and got special deals.

NO ONE port matches exhaust headers.

you're supposed to have a pretty profound step between the header and the exhaust port so you don't LOSE power.

btw, tihs ain't my theory, read Performance Tuning of 4 cycle engines (or something like that) written by A Graham Bell.

special deals as in mfg cost

i'd hate to know what a NEW TRD final drive would cost since a stock OEM new unit is more than 1000 bucks cdn

And ya, I thought it seemed a little cheap for all the **** that was in the car as well. But then again reading the banner accross the front of his windshield I originally thought it was ether his personal website or mabey a maker of no name parts or something but it turned out to be a shop. So the guy is most likley sponsored and or owns that shop and got most of the **** dirt cheap.

One thing that I thought was funny though is that you see an Endless sticker on the car and yet there was not a single part made by endless in the car.
