Pointers....

I have a Corolla ae101r. 95'
I have au$5000 to spend on the engine. What would be the best way to go, do I work on the original 1600cc engine or do I get a swap engine from Jap imports here in South Australia and wack a silver top in??
People I have spoke with are giving me conflicting options. Some saying work on the original and others saying put a new/secondhand 4AGE in.
I want to keep the reliability I get with the standard engine as I do a few klicks to and from work.
Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Paul

I know a girl from where you are from :p.

Hmmm thats a question only you can answer in the end. the swap will probably cost you most of the money. But if you only put a little into the current motor that leaves you money for suspension, tires, brakes, and rims

I appreciate that. It will in the long run be my own decision.
I have lowered it by 1.5' have added King extractors 2.5 sports throughout with a Genie back box. Has a lovely growl about it, but it needs to be quicker. I am getting the cold air intake put in next week. (K&N)

Where does that girl live that you know?

I don't know, never been to Australia, she just told me she lives in Adelaide

You could always turbo your current motor.

What do you have on it for tires? Because there's no point in upgrading the power if what connects them to the road can't deal with it.

I dated an aussie chick once.

As for your engine, I wouldnt even bother with an N/A engine. But thats just me, I'm a boostaholic.

I'm not an ozzie by the way. I'm expat English.
I've only got 14's with Simex rubber at the moment. As the car only came with 13's legally I can only go as far as 15's Which will be done in the same process.
How long will a standard engine with a turbo last? 10,000 kms? 15,000 if I'm lucky.

flashmn, your still on the first motor? no?

This is what you talk to flashmn about since he turbo'd a 4af and said it was still reliable

Don't underestimate what a 4a engine can put out and do, they stay pretty reliable even with boost, depending on how much you pound on it. If you do it every once and awhile I can't see why you'd have a problem? rev the shit out of it all the time? and well even a stock motor will give in eventually...
