Unhappy 98 Squeaky Breaks?

ok so my car just strarted to squeak... like super badly one day. I had it checked over and the garage said that its really nothing its cause of what my breaks are made out of. The mechanic said that its cause when its humid. Well lately its been getting worse and i feel that my breaks dont work as good.

My question is... is the garage trustworthy or should i get some new breaks.

Second question is... what kind of breaks and from where.

Ps. The mechanic said that there is some surface rust on it... would that have anything to do with it?

Surface rust should be gone once the your use your brakes and the pad touches them. You might see rust form on places elsewhere, nothing to be concerned about. Take a pic of your pad as well as the rotors since its hard to diagnose over the internet with words. As squeeking can be lots of things from the vibration of the pad's backing to the pads telling you you need new brakes and to the materials of the pads used.

what brake pads are you using?? some cheap pads are like that. they really squeak even if they are'nt worn out yet and sometime looses grip which is really scary. use Toyota Genuine brake pads instead.

are your brake pad shims installed? if not, get them installed

if that doesn't work, check your rotors for wear...sometimes pads erode the rotors so badly that they cut grooves and cause squeaking...in which case, u have to end up machining your rotors and changing pads (pads and rotora wear together so it's best u get new ones when u machining the rotors
