...octane selector???????

has anyone heard of this???? I was looking through autozone's free repair guide and I found a section referring to the 'octance selector' and how it slightly changes the valve timing to better suit your fuel octane.

can anyone tell me more about this device? I normally use premium (93 oct) gas in my AE82 and I was wondering if adjusting this device might benefit me at all?

it just advanced/retards the timing by turning the distributor.
