Angry CV Axles_1990 Corolla

1990 corolla
I pulled my cv axle (both) and replaced them with rebuilt ones, I had to return two drivers side (shorter) axles as they were both problematic and finally the third one worked, kinda of make me wonder what sort of a job they do at the rebuild shop.

Everything worked out fine, drove the car for about 50 miles, now both axle have excessive play in the inner cv axles both sides, and clunking noises. I wonder if I damaged the transmission end of the spline. Has any one experienced this or replaced the gears on the transmission end.

Need big time help.

Thanks

Just make sure that the tranny end on both axles are seated all the way home. Yes the rebuilt axles are about 50% bad for me. They also come in different lengths and in different nut sizes.

As 91boz states, make sure the axle is seated in the differential gear. They can and do pop out if not seated properly.

And don’t overlook having another bad axle. I had to return 3 rebuilt axles in a row; one was a just a little to short, the last one started clicking at the outer joint after only 100 miles. From talking to the sales clerk, this was not uncommon.

Thanks for the replies, I have always made sure that it was seated right up against the tranny end and the sound of the hammer changes once it reaches the end.

Based on your reply I have decided to put in new axle as they are not that much more in prices (rebuilt $80 new $119). However, I am still wondering if the tranny end maybe the problem now, is it possible damage can be caused from too much hammering trying to remove and reseat the axles at the tranny end.

Thanks again

With axle installed in the car, grab the inner joint housing (not the axle). Push/pull, move side-to-side, etc. There should be little movement of the joint housing. The axle is usually slammed home to engage the cir-clip when installing and popped out with a pry bar. Hammer is sometimes used on axles having a carrier bearing which sticks in the housing. Take a look at the removed shaft, any damage to the clip or shaft?

CV Axles

I am just finishing up replacing my timing belt on my 90 Prizm and in the shop manual there is a procedure that needs to be followed when hooking up the motor and transaxle mounts. Reference was made to improper installation of the mounts (or hooking them back up) to the inner CV joint making noise and/or possible failure. The Haynes manual I also have does not mention anything about the procedure.

Also I had to replace apassenger CV axle after 10,000 miles due to the outer boot ripping. Auto Zone does not sell the "Value Line" CV axles anymore due to numerous complains of quality problems not only with the Prizm but other autos.

Cool

I bought my rebuilt /new Axles though Kragen Auto part aka http://www.partsamerica.com/
I like their prices and quality seems good. I bought mine in the store though (core exchange in store), but if you prefer ordering, use the website for some parts.

fyi

I removed the rebuilt axle. I am afraid that the transmission end where the CV axle inner connects to the transmission has too much play. Has any one experienced this or had to repair or replace the transmission end of the spline. I suspect it is a big job. One wheel bearing (passenger side) also needs to be replaced.

I like earlier said "Need Big Time Help"
Thanks

1990 Toyota Corolla 3 speed Automatic transmission

I removed my both front halfshaft and discovered that there is too much play in the axle splines in the transmission end. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Can the transaxle be repaired or replace without replacing the entire transmission?

Would appreciate help in this area. replacement tranny got a quote of $1100 (thru autozone). any one know of a good wrecker for a replacement tranny?

Thanks

Exclamation

don't mistake gear modement, for wear. The gears are suppose to move around a bit where the axles slide in.
