put in new speakers!

2001 Chevy Prizm , bought new headunit and speakers

sony cdx-gt610ui

played with the headunit at wal-mart and its awesome, has the ipod hookup, usb, auxilary, and puts out 52watts to 4 speakers

the headunit doesn't just plug right into my stock harness so i have to splice together like 13 wires... that'll get done later

xs-gt1625a

hooked up the 4 speakers which needed wires to be spliced again and they work amazingly compared to the stock ones

only problem was the front doors, the old speakers had like rivets holding them in... so i just cracked them out with a screwdriver...

stock = 15 watts 4 ohms
new = 40 watts 6 ohms, 190watts peak

my first time ever dealing with stuff like this and i say it came out pretty good, no rattles or shaking so far...

---

now since it pushes out 52watts to each speaker, what will i need to do to ensure i dont blow mine?

For the headunit, you can get A wire harness that you just plug into the factory one and the back at the headunit. You acn get it at best buy for like 5.99

That headunit only puts out 17W RMS per channel, it won't produce enough power to blow the speakers.

RMS= "average" power (sustainable)
Peak= "maxiumum" power (unsustainable)

just to clear things up.

I wonder if it's a good idea to mix a 4ohm HU with 6ohm speakers...

Did you buy are audio speakers? A wiring harness at wally world only cost about 7 bucks and that will color codes the wires then all you have to do is butt connector it togethor or what ever wiring method you would like. The radio's that have the big 52 just do it to sell the stero you might only have a problem if you hooked up an amp to these speakers that is the only way i can see you blowing them unless it was wired incorrectly.

the speakers and headunit came as a package deal through sony itself... so it shouldn't harm it lol

bought the wiring harness from bestbuy... only thing is some of the colors are different lol... we'll just see how that works out...

I never get sick and tired of saying this... buy the Toyota harness from Walmart or any audio shop, you basically match the wires from the harness to the head unit and the harness plugs into the female harness from your car.

let us know how it goes.

actually since its a prizm it uses the GM wiring harness....

and it has different colors than the wires for my headunit...

i've been busy so i'll read all the papers that came with each to see what wires do what... and then see if i want to risk hooking it up

how I do it... I look at the label on the radio and read the label on the new headunit... and match them up accordingly..

Only thing with my ae92 is I had to redo the speaker wire as there wasn't a negative wire going to the headunit with the stock wires so I ran all new wire under the carpet from the back, home audio stuff, thick as hell lol

Head units don't have ohms.

well its in and hooked up

bought butt connectors andconnected all the wires... well, the wires that COULD be connected lol, there were 4 left over, but they were for an AMP, power antenna, dimmer switch, and something else...

bought the mounting thing from wally world and it's ridiculously cheap quality

also the screws that came with the headunit, don't fit into the headunit (wtf?)

so i have to custom make a mounting bracket for it...

and when i put on some of those "gangster" songs the bass shook loose a few things lol, so i have to tighten up all the screws for the speakers again

Put a couple of layers of sound deadener on the doors and on the rear deck and they'll sound even better. While you're at it, it wouldn't hurt to deaden the floors and the trunk. That is unless you are concerned about the added weight.

The 200 hundred bucks for all that deadener would not really be needed on this "type" of audio system no offense. I would recommend deader if you are putting some subs and stuff in which you might do later... but then that’s rca's wiring kits and at least 300 or so for decent good quality sub, amp and box "that’s not including the extra 200 for the deadener". However, I would use some sound proofing material on it just for your on comfort it cuts down on the heat and you do not have much road noise, and that’s not to mention that your speakers would sound a little better. Those little package deals are not bad if you just want to make it sound decent; I installed a few for some extra cash and they did not sound too bad. Granted I do not care for Sony to much lol puts that’s just my personal preference. I hope it sounds good man! Congrats on a successful install.

Some people could learn from that! lol I have seen countless do it yourself/no instructions needed.... disasters

I agree that sound deadening the whole car would be over the top for just a few coxials running off of a head unit. I was thinking along the lines of making it as quiet as possible in the cabin to extract as much detail and bass out of the speakers as possible. Also, I have a hunch that he'll eventually get bitten by the mobile audio bug one way or another.
