4A-GE Timing Alignment

I know there's probably no reason why the timing should be off, but the red top I have did not come with a timing belt on it, so I have no reason to believe that the timing is on. Therefore, I'm trying to figure out how to align it, but there's no marks on the belt, and I cannot find a resource online explaining how to align them all, I'd love some help with this issue, if anyone knows a resource or anything to align them, I would appreciate it.

Thanks guys!

The crank and camshafts all have indicators. Turn everything till everything is pointing upwards (there are marks to show you when things are lined up). While the car is TDC, you can put the distributor in as well since the distributor runs off the exhaust cam and needs to be aligned correct as well (circle dot on the distributor gear pointing as up as possible, then insert while the car is in TDC).

If you have a lower compression N/A motor, you're can relax just a little because it's a non interference motor. I've had my engine off by a tooth on accident and it still didn't cause any damage.

I have the 10.3 compression motor, and while it's non-interfering, there still is some risk to it; however, I didn't know you could have all the points pointing upwards. On the two cam gears, I have seen the markers, but on the crank timing pulley, I haven't seen a marker. I assume it's not the slot on the pulley? I'm guessing you don't know of a diagram or a picture of it is? Or a site that might have some helpful info?

What's the deflection supposed to be on the timing belt. I appreciate it! Headed back out to work on it again.

We used the deflection rating "tight enough." Lol, should work though. I got the water pump, timing belt, and flywheel all bolted up today. I still have to do spark plugs, wires, and distributer cap and rotor, then bolt up the clutch, pressure plate, and tranny. After that, I think we'll be ready to put the motor in the bay, I can't wait!

I really appreciate all your help guys, that diagram especially was a huge help. Thanks again everyone (I'm sure I'll be back soon with more questions :P)

Adios.

Glad you figured it out.

FYI: http://www.mr2mk1club.com/repairsp78.html

http://corollae9.extra.hu/1988-894agerebuild.pdf

"3) Install timing belt. Loosen idler pulley (tensioner) bolt
and allow pulley to move against belt. Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions
from TDC to TDC. Tighten idler pulley (tensioner) bolt. Recheck timing
mark alignment and adjust if necessary.
4) Measure belt deflection between both camshaft sprockets.
See Fig. 5. Deflection should be 4.4 lbs. at .16" (2.0 kg at 4.1 mm).
If deflection is incorrect, readjust with idler pulley (tensioner)."
