I pretty much bought mine without doing much research.
For the amount of money you put in to it restoring is considered an act of suicide. You'll probably have the slowest car on the block after you throw $5000 at it but the fun factor definitely out wieghs the speed and hp.
problem with 86's is you have to spend a lot of money maintaining them as well as money on the go-fast goodies (which would be true for any old car)..
so just when you've got money saved up for that fun LSD, your brake master cyl will start leaking or something, or maybe your gas tank needs replacing, etc..
as far as cost of performance parts, i don't think they're that expensive (not as cheap as honda aftermarket), but the main difficulty a lot of times is finding the parts, not necessarily the cost.
you can get some idea of how much some stuff will cost by checking out
ah ZipZip.....I see you might have got the AE-86 bug, so did I.....It's hard to find one of these babies in good shape......I spent some time looking myself.....I found one in decent shape and I'm restoring one as we speak, ground up.....Luckily enough I can get any JDM engine I want so the go fast thing is no problem it just depends on how deep you want to go into your pocket.......I plan on tweeking my engine up, but I have an Altezza IS-200 motor and six speed in the works to shoehorn in the car........
Don't let anyone discourage you......Yes Subaru parts are expensive and the corolla's aren't that bad........The only hard time I'm having is finding a JDM Kouki rear bumper......

good luck on your search
Hold up... you drive a Porsche and you're spending your time on a rusty old Corolla? You've got your priorities all messed up man.
btw, bring it out to a meet or trackday when you're done, I'm sure we'd all love to see it.
who said anything about rusty? ......I love cars and car enthusiasts know that you can have fun in just about any car , this has nothing to do with prorities, the Porsche is for the hunnies ......I've always wanted to have a modded up GTS since it came out but just couldn't afford it......Now I can so I bought one.........I will be at the track more often now since I will hopefully end up with a track ready AE-86......hope to meet up with some of you to trade stories.....

Gah, maybe its just the perspective of sombody who dreams of Porsches dancing around road courses. I know that if I had a drop-top 996, it would get the bulk of my attention. But, to that same end, I know what you're saying and where you're coming from. As I said, I can't wait to see it and I'm sure it'll be minty clean and stupid fast when its done.

what would parts cost?
new suspension.. tires etc etc..
Im a subaru guy and subaru parts cost a fortune!!
I agree with Mister_Sinister.
I originally had the intention of throwing a 13b Turbo into my car. But shit keeps on creeping up on me (body rust, parking brakes, distributor etc etc )and now I'm sorta pissed that I can't do my engine swap as fast as I wanted to. Its a funnest car you'll drive that has 110hp. I decided I'm happy with the small amount of power and gonna drive the 4ag motor to the grave then decide whether or not I'm gonna do the swap.
cosmicbutthairs....it is a huge pain when surprises keep you from doing the upgrades you want, but that's what keeps things interesting...if your project was finished, you just might get bored of it......the anticipation of finishing or bulding a project is what makes us enthusiasts.....keep on plugging....
I dont see how the Porshe guy has any priorities mixed up...My MR2 Turbo is my project car, pride and joy but I need a daily driver, so it might as well be another passion, just on a different scale...
The only cars I would ever spend money on to own are FD RX7's, MK4 Supra's, SW20 MR2 Turbo's or AE86's...Im a sucker for old school imports, at least at this stage of my young life
true, true.......MR-2's are cool...I haven't had one of those yet...but was very close....my partner has one in the shop with a JDM '98 engine in it with a full stand alone and endless mods....he's looking to get 500hp.....wow...You mentioned FD'S......I miss mine dearly....I will buy another one day.....
