1998 Corolla Brake light and Center console light

Hi.
I like to think I have at least 1/2 a brain, but working on cars, I often wonder if that is true.
Either way, nothing ever is as simple as it should be with cars these days.
Trying to get at my left rear brake light on my Toyota Corolla 1998.
Removed 2 screws from outside and 1 nut on the inside. Is 2 black things on the inside that appear to be keeping the outside light lens from coming off. They are square size on the bottom and have a round hollow center tube. How do I get these off????

2nd item, trying to remove center console final piece to replace the gear shift light. Had 4 tabs that need to be pushed down and in to take piece off. But is such a cramped place, I cannot get all 4 down easily and to stay down when push others down. Any tricks???
