Draining fuel tank?

Hello all,

My brother, whom you all may know as ae92redtop, was in an accident, and to make a long story short, his car is going to be sitting for awhile. We would like to drain out the gas in the tank to prevent it from getting stale.

I know there is what looks to be a drain plug on the bottom of the tank. Has anybody ever attempted to remove this plug? Are there any precautions I should take in order not to fubar the plug/tank, or is it just a straight up r&r?

For what its worth there is little to no rust under the car.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

yes, it should be able to be removed with a 1/2" ratchet extension...

it goes to the tank so have a bucket waiting.

You might want to think of going the other way and fill the tank to prevent rust. Make a strong mixture with Sta-bil (I can't remember the spelling) or some other fuel stabalizer and fill it up.

Mission Accomplised

Thanks for all you input guys. It drained out pretty easy, although I had to fight with the plug a bit(my mantra is turn it back and forth[loosen then tighten]). The only thing I could conceivably complain about is the fact that the plug is at the rear of the tank, so not all the gas can really come out if you just have the back of the car raised. Despite that, about 5.5 gallons fell out, which I put in our Camry.

One thing did go wrong; the little rubber gasket for the drain plug of course got torn, but for now its empty, so NBD.

Oh and its a 3/8" drive extension, not a 1/2".

Thanks again everyone!
