I hate to be an ass... but HOW ABOUT U GO LOOK YOURFREAKIN'SELF!
These facts are readily available on the net and u could find out as fast as u posted this thread... I still believe the TDI is above the rest in fuel economy... it's diesel....
also MPG depends on driving habits... if u got a heavy foot don't expect 30 mpg... ex: the STI can get 600 km on a full tank if u drive conservatively... stomp on the accel and it goes down to 300... get my "drift?"
if u ask me... why bother with the corolla if u can get TDI... it's way more fuel efficient... if anything u should compare the Prius to the TDI in terms of gas mileage... but if u want the build quality in the corolla... it is gentle on the gas... The matrix is a tad bit bulkier but with the bulk comes extra utility... so don't expect miracles from the matrix...
TDI sport compacts in NA is kinda like beta... surperior in gas mileage.. but just never generally accepted
hope that helps a bit (I don't own any of those cars so I can't help u in that department ):p
My 5 speed 01 Corolla is rated at 33/38 and I have seen that and more. The Auto is a bit less. The 03s have the same engine and are rated at 34/39. I have personnaly gotten and average of about 34 mpg, more off highway than on, with a peak of 39mpg on an all-highway tank at not very conservative speeds. The Jetta TDI as was mentioned is going to do a hell of a lot better than that. Maybe you should look at a Prius. I think they get 53 on the highway. As for the 'Trix XR it has the same engine as my car but weighs substantially more, so out of the few cars mentioned here, it will get the worst mileage but still good, probably 35+ on the highway...
Hope that helps and please read the rules and post in M/M/M
If you can afford a VW why the would you care about MPG's?
And who the hell wants to listen to a diesel motor? not to mention repair costs on the turbo or supercharger whatever them things got ! yucko! stick with the corolla!
The "regular" maintenance on the TDI is no more expensive then the Corolla (Oil change interval twice as long). If you drive a newer TDI, they are not noisy at all.

yes, new diesels are just as quiet and the performance is even comparable
and the engine will make it past 400000km without breaking a sweat
5 spd tranny too, i've seen some with 350 000 12 years old and original clutch
Firescooby,
get the TDI man. great gas milleage, lots of bells and whistles.
i used to drive my girlfriend's GL2.0 Jetta a lot, before i got my camry and it's just a great car. i was driving it a couple of days ago and it sorta made me regret getting the camry...
but, since you are comparing the Jetta with the Matrix and Corolla, go VW man! don't know if you are interested but, i was told that you can chip the TDI somehow and make it fly, so don't let the 90hp discourage you. you will also be happy with disc brakes around, standard ABS, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, TWO one-touch power windows (up/down) (I LOVE THIS), velour seats, killer torque.
i think that i have said too much.....
i love my camry but would still consider the VW.

yea yea what ever vw will cost alot more I've seen 250,000 miles out of dodge neon's that cost 1000's less ! oh & lets see you get parts for this thing? besides that who would ride in the same vehicle for 350,000 miles dude you do NOT know what your smokin
I wasnt starting a brand war here, just stating facts.
FYI: I keep vehicles longer than the 3 years it takes to pay them off. I dont see any reason to get rid of a vehicle if there is nothing wrong with it.
Choices are really simple. If you want performance get the Matrix XRS. If you want Economy get the TDI. If you want something in between get a Corolla. I think all are reliable.
BTW we just took our Automatic Echo throught the mountains for a quick tenting trip this weekend - 6 hour drive each way - I averaged about 110 KM/h (about 70MPH) speeds up to 160KPH(100MPH ) -so I was driving hard - from Calgary to Salmon Arm and back (over the Rockies) And I managed about 700 KM for 37 Litres of gas both on the way out and on the way back. With the car more than stuffed full of camping goodies for the three of us.

my ex gf had a TDI jetta... and it was LOUD... i thin it was the 2000 model... but it has ALOT OF km on it because it's a company car... mechanically the car has been very good to her... but the electrical system in german cars are... well not as good as the japanese...
If it all comes down to gas mileage... the VW is probably the way to go...
but from my personal experience.... I don't like how hte vw drives... the steering wheel felt like Initial D ver2 with the feedback on 8... and the brake/gas pedal had no driver feedback... felt almost like an electronic switch.... touch it and the car either leaps forward in a burst of speed... or grinds to a hault...
but... if price is not that big of an issue (ie if u can afford the TDI of a VW) then u may want to look at the toyota prius or echo hatch... they are cheap on gas and have similar if not surperior gas mileage
besides... echo hatch = vitz with no supercharger...
