Exclamation 4AF carburetor...HOW DO I REMOVE IT???*be prepared to READ..long thread*

My 89 corolla DX has over 220,000 miles on it, and now the carb is in need of a rebuild or replacement. I've heard that a rebuild is VERY very hard to do, and its better to just grab a carb out of the junkyard and replace the carb in the car. Thats what i plan on doing, but upon attempting to remove the carb from the car that needs the rebuild, im having SO many issues. 1st of all, i cant completely remove the bottom of the airbox and i've stripped one of the screws around the back of it... 2nd, i can see all 4 of the nuts that are required to take the carb off, but i can't reach them cuz all the vacuum lines and electronics are in the way! As you can obviously see, im no mechanic, and I've already gone through the Haynes manual, and the guide to carb removal is EXTREMELY vague and pretty much 100% unhelpful. Nobody seems to know how to remove the 4AF engine's carb, and basically what i need is someone who knows how to remove it to post me up a step by step guide to removing that stupid carburetor from the engine! (or, PM me a guide... )
Because I have almost no idea what i'm doing as far as all the tiny amounts of space in the hood, and/or figuring out how to get any leverage and access to the nuts/bolts/screws etc.

Basically....How do i get ANY leverage and/or access to the required nuts and bolts under the hood to remove the carb?? I can't figure out how you get in there!!

www.autozone.com has instructions with some illustrations as well for removal/installation and overhaul. I can't post a direct link because of how they have the site laid out but I'll tell you how to find it.

on their main page on the lower left click on 'vehicle repair guides' follow the prompts for year and make to select your car. then when you get to the main repair guide screen for your car, click the link for 'fuel system'. click the bulleted link to the right 'carbureted fuel system' and then finally click the drop-down link 'carburetor'.

good luck! I've been thinking about overhauling/replacing the carb on my 4ac, so make sure to report back on how it goes!!!

I'm just gonna say that rebuilding a carb is a hard task. Especially the toyota Aisan Carb.... Tried it once a long time ago... and wont do it again.

If you have never rebuilt carbs, don't try to learn on this one. That said. I did my 1989 Corolla SR5, a couple years back. A rebuild kit is $50.00 at Napa Auto.

Do not every try to tweak adjust the float. Leave it as is! It is probably set good as is. Just replace all the jets and gaskets. Thejre are a few tiny springs and ball bearings.

Take plenty of pictures before you take anything apart and through the whole process take snapshots.

One thing that really is needed is to buy a small bucket of carb cleaner with a basket and soak the crab parts in for at least 24 hours, if not 48 hours.

You must own the right tools, or you will strip bolts and screws.

The Best thing to do is have a carb shop either rebuild it, or put a new one/rebuilt on it.

(with california smog, and a few electronic solenoids) I found it a night mare to unscrew the solenoids, as the wires make it to hard to unscrew them. Plus, I could not figure out how to unsolder the wires form the solenoids, as the end cap connectors have been sealed with some plastic material. I left the wires on and unscrewed them but that probably was hell on the wires. I do not recommend anyone go through this.

Okay, the Autozone guide is reallly helpful, thanx a lot. BUT! im still having issues with step #3, and there are ~3 or 4 screws that are attatched to the bottom of the air cleaner thats preventing me from getting it out. Thats where i stripped one of them because i couldnt get any leverage to twist em out because theyre upside down. They are located in the area of where i have the circle drawn in the illustration.

Question

I don't understand what screw you are talking about...

only thing that holds it down is the wingnut on top.. and the 3 clips which hold the top and bottom halves. And the stupid rubber hose!

ok. It's REALLY easy to remove the carb.

See the air cleaner box.. That stays together.. I NEVER remove those screws when I take it apart. Those are connected to a piece that goes into a rubber hose. So what you have to do is push the hose clamp farther down and then just PULL up away from the hose and it will come off, don't forget there are a couple other vacume lines connected to that.

After that there's the vacume lines, mark them to make it easier to reconnect them after. And if I remember correctly either 2 nuts (by the engine) and 2 bolts (by the firewall), or just 4 nuts that hold it on.. after that Lift up and walla.

But dude not to be rude or mean, if your having trouble removing the air cleaner I would NOT rebuild the carb or even removing the carb...

Oh, and just another question: Can anyone tell me how many vacuum lines that i should have labeled once i'm done with it all?? So far, i've only labeled 9 vacuum lines around the front of the carb. (No, im not finished, and i dont expect to be anywhere near being finished anytime soon....)

And, how many electrical connections are there to the carb??
I'm just kinda making a ''checklist'' sortof..

I was just throwing that out there because even with the first car I worked on I usually figured out what was wrong and how to fix it with VERY little help.

The only thing I looked at the manual to change my headgasket for was for the torque spec, and the timing mark alignment.

I think there's just the one wire harness plug on it, I can't remember off the top off my head. As for vacumelines... as many as connect to the carb preventing you from pulling it out.

I think the biggest problem with when people look working on their cars is they look at it in such a complex way. Look at it in a simple way and usually it makes more sense lol.

ohh okay....lol. Well, i know theres 1 harness to the carb, and i've already gotten off all the UPPER vacuum lines and the fuel in/out/return lines too. Now, all i need to do is figure out how to get the ****ing wire harness off!!

On the clip that holds it, do you push the thing down, or do you pull it up/out??

it's a bit of a pain, but it should be a tab you squeeze and just pull.

Btw... I feel like I should warn you about this. The carb holds a good ammount of fuel.. so don't tip it to the side to much or upside down unless you want gas everywhere lol.
