Almost time for an Oil Change

Well, its coming to my first oil change and I need what the best of the best is for the Corolla. I used to take it to the dealership, and they would do it for free with the previous cars, but I guess why not lets try something new...

People at Autozone said that the K&N Oil Fliter would do great. Even though its like $12 bux, they said its all worth it.

As for oil..they didn't really give me an answer..

Ofcourse, thats probably their most expensive filter... :P

I go with OEM.

As for oils, 5W-40 would be my choice.

I would recommend any of the good dino/synthetic blends for the first 25000 miles, then go to full synthetic afterwards. Advance just started carrying Motorcraft dino/syn blend, so thats easy to get here in VA.

The more I read your posts the more I.....no comment.

Any oil would do fine with your 1zz. Stick with any reputable brands. The engine is not mild nor heavily modified so it doesn't need anything special.

Unless you've got money to burn, you can probably stop buying those KN oil filters for $12 ea. Purolator Pure One, part number PL14476, and Napa Gold, pn 1394, (rebranded Wix pn 51394) will do just fine at $5-6 each. Purolator Premium filters, pn L14476, will work just fine also for $3-5 (depending on sale or regular price).

You can also use the slightly larger filter that the 2ZZ-GE uses if you have clearance. The thread and gasket are the same size but the filter is about 1/2" taller. Napa pn 1396 or Wix 51396, or Purolator PL14477 or L14477.

Any name brand oil should be good for 5000 miles.

I just went from full synthitic to regualr, and I have had no problems what so ever.

I use K&N for the only reason that they have a socket on the bottom of it that allows easy removal. I seem to have a problem of getting filters out.

not true at all, that's an old wives' tale.

If synthetic and mineral oil didn't mix they wouldn't sell syn/mineral BLENDS.

you can bounce back and forth all you want.

the only question is...is synthetic worth it? I think so, but that's just me. Synthetics resist oxidation better and have fewer contaminants ("fewer" as in none).

I use Mobile 1, 5w30. Don't use a different weight unless there is a damn good reason too. You don't know better than the toyota engineers...

I use mobile filters too, just because sometimes I accidentitally run an extended interval. I want to make sure the filter won't fill up if I let it slide a few months.

Perhaps you are over tightening them. On my 2000 Camry, I could remove the filters by hand.

It's great unless you've got a leaky 7A-FE and go through a quart every ~600 miles. That adds up! *L*

Actually, going to a fixed-weight oil (30-weight instead of 10-30 or 5-30) can help with some consumption issues.

Reportedly, the 2ZZGE or 1ZZFE filters will fit other engines of the A-series. They're a bit longer, but have the same thread pitch. Also, anecdotal evidence (read: can't remember where I read it) suggests that the Toyota racing teams actually do use the stock filters. They are really stupidly cheap.

Bought my FX16 new in 1987. After 800 miles went to M1,Torco full syn is also great. Only used oem filter. Went over 300,000miles never touched motor 2 vales out of agj by .001 cam miked on high side. Did top end when car was stolen and got it back with blown hg.Never used a drop of oil. Changed it every 5k. Still could see cross hatch marks faintly. First 80, 000 miles that car would see 6k rpm reg. Wayne

Thats what I thought I was doing. then I was putting them on and would stop when the filter hits the engine, but that seems to be to tight. I always use some oil on the gaskit before I put the filter on. And I have double check that I am using the correct filter size many times. I just don't know.
