changed rear brake shoes

I have 96 Toyota Corrola 4 Cylinder and this is my first time done rear brake shoes...

Is there anything I should not do and should do in between the brake job? does the brake shoes on 96 Corrola has the short or long shoes? i heard the long brake shoes install on the right first?

do one side at a time, so you can see what parts go where.. don't mess with the hydraulic cylinder... if you want to make it easier, buy some brake tools.. if you don't know how, I have no clue what book as the instructions, as I grew up learning to do this stuff and did not learn from books..

try to clean all the brake dust out, only use brake cleaner, do not touch the shoes with greasy handy, they must be clean! Shop air helps clean the braje dust, but when you pul them off, take them to an area outside and pop them down on the ground so the dust is knocked out..... clean the assembly out with brake cleaner, in spray can, if it is really nasty,,, if you blow it with shop air.... be prepared for the nastiest dust ever..

you must know how to adjust the shoes so they are neither to loose, not to tight when you slide the drum back over them..

It's not hard, but if you have never done them, I hope there instructions somewhere to help you... make sure the drum turns freely when you assemble them, but only a few thousandths from the soes rubbing the drum when turned...

you will probably need to bleed them,, although a self bleeding kit is nice, I still prefer having a second person to help, so I can watch the fluid in the clear hose and watch for air..

Hi,

I changed out the rear brakes yesterday...everything went smoothly... now, i have couple of question about bleeding the brakes fluid.. Does it neccessary to bleed brakes fluid? since, i didn't loose the brake hose on the rear brakes....every brakes job, do you have to bleed the brake fluid if you didn't loose the brake hoses? is this a practice for every brakes job?

If you didnt open the brake line and your brakes are not spongy then NO you dont need to bleed the brakes for that reason. However, you should check the condition of the brake fluid. If it is dark and looks "burnt" then yes change the fluid. To change the fluid you will have to run it through the entire brake system. That will require bleeding them. Usually I found if you change your fluid every 1-2 years it will help a lot to keep the brake lines clean of debris.

Almost forgot, definitely dont use air to clean your brakes out. Use brake cleaner and put a drip pan underneath cause its gonna leave a mess if you dont. Once they are all cleaned off, you can dry them using shop air.

does the rear brake adjust itself as time go by (driving) or you have to manually go in adjust the adjustor for yourself?

my brake padal only hear a squeed noise only when you release the brake padal BUT NOT WHEN YOU PRESS THE BRAKE PADAL DOWN? DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT CAUSE THE NOISE? CAN THE NOISE COME FROM THE CALIPAR FRONT BRAKES ?
