Unhappy Oil change blues...

ok so I've tried posting this twice so far, explaining the whole story, but when I go to post i would get an 'cannot find page' page and when I went back it erased everything I wrote.
out of frustration, here's the skinny

went to get an oil change today as scheduled. the guy pulled my dipstick and it was dry, he thought I was far overdue for an oil change but I was less than 50 miles over 3000.

they ran an oil system cleaner to get the soft sludge out, the guy recommended against an engine flush as it could remove hard sludge deposits and make my engine leak 'like a sieve'. then they found that my oil pan gasket was deteriorating and there is an oily film on the bottom of my pan. they suggested some engine sealer to help with the problem. the stuff takes 100 miles to kick in and is guaranteed to work, so they said to bring it back in 100 miles to see if it worked. they said this should definitely help with the oil consumption but I need a new oil pan gasket soon.

I'm glad I haven't started changing my own oil like I've been thinking about, because I probably wouldn't understand these problems or how to treat them. but $75 for a 19 point inspection, maxlife oilchange, oil system cleaner, and engine sealer seems a little pricey to me. maybe I'll stick with the cheaper quicklube place for the most part and bring it back to this higher end oil garage occasionally to get a better checkup

SO why didn't they change the oil pan gasket?
Call me crazy, but if my old gasket is shot I replace it. Find a new shop

*shrug* I guess they don't do that service there, or carry pan gaskets, either or.
I'm used to going to a cheapo quicklube place that hardly does much besides change the oil. I went with my friend when he got his done at this place and they seemed like they did a lot better job overall, so I decided to try it out.
http://www.uncleedsoil.com/products.htm

they're still better than the $25 quicklube place. they probably wouldn't have mentioned it at all.

I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of TX7 engine treatment? they had brochures on it at the oil shop, but I didn't get it because i heard mentioned somewhere on these boards that toyota engine's shouldn't use engine oil treatments. it seems like a good idea though if I have leaks in my engine.

Yea seriously, got to a better shop that can actually fix the problems. That shop is saying, if your oil gasket is leaking to put something in instead of replacing it which is simple. And not to get rid of deposits?

Gaskets are cheap. Motors aren't. Get some Seafoam in there to clean out the deposits, then consider switching to a synthetic to dislodge and remove the rest. Yes, it may increase oil consumption/leaking as all the crud gets washed away from the leaking places, but you'll be able to see what's leaking/burning a lot better, and once the engine's clean going to either a fixed-weight oil or back to dino will seal everything back up again if it needs to be.

guys, that's an oil service shop...not a mechanic. They usually don't do repairs.

However, they really should refer you to a mechanic to have the gasket replaced instead of running some snake oil sealer through.

There's no replacement for...replacement (of worn parts). lol

Those quick lube places are full of a bunch of moody highschool kids who over tighten and overfill everything, and basically do shoddy work all around.

$100 to change the transmission oil is a little steep. I just did mine for $20, using the best oil I know of (Redline MTL). Remember, transmission oil should be changed every 2-3 years ;-D

haha, you got taken for a ride. clean the engine down of all the oil on it and then see for yourself where its leaking from. then goto a shop and have them replace the pan gasket, if thats where the leak is. should cost less than $250 for parts and labor on the pan gasket, and can even be done on jackstands in a driveway with basic hand tools!

I dont see the necessity of seafoam, just replace the oils with some good oil and that will keep the engine clean.

As for this:

I'm just gonna say yikes.. so they put some stuff in the engine that flows with the oil and then clogs up leaks... Sounds to me like theres going to be a case of crank bearing failure in the near future. I'd never let anyone put some of those "leak fixing" fluids into my engine. One who does that, will get his teeth knocked down their throat.

Exclamation

an engine that burns oil, you don't want to flush it out! It wil burn much more oil.... if an engine leaks oil, you don't want to flush it! It wil leak mush worse if you flush it...

I looked up some info on the product online. It doesn't actually just fill in leak spots. It's something about the gaskets and seals shrinking hardening and drying out over time, and the stuff is just a conditioner that 'safely swells, softens, and conditions the rubber seals, and stops the leaks...'

^Oil pan gasket is not plastic, its cork. So whatever they used probably not gonna work.
You don't need the gasket. Applying a good layer of silicone gasket and bolt the pan back will keep it seal for much longer.
Also you may be leaking from somewhere else.
Now check your oil every week before it get dry again.

actually....its called FIPG (Formed In Place Gasket) It's toyotas version of high quality silcone stuff.

My opinion and yes I'm an ass...you get what you pay for at quicklube places

....you wouldn't believe how many motor jobs we've done that WalMart had to pay the bill for...or a couple Jiffy Lube ones.....

Indeed...

Funny thing is, you go in for an oil change and they start to make all kinds of suggestions marketing them, so eventually you have alot more than just the oil change
